What is Anxiety? Anxiety: – Is a common feeling of nervousness, fear, or worry that precedes a challenging event. These feelings are easily justified and considered normal. Anxiety is considered a problem when symptoms interfere with a person's ability to sleep or otherwise function.

Anxiety Disorders A condition in which real or imagined fears are difficult to control. These fears can lead to unwanted behaviors. It is the most common mental health problem in the United States Generally speaking, anxiety disorders occurs when a reaction is out of proportion with what might be normally expected in a situation Ex: “If I speak in front of a large crowd my heart will stop and I will die”.

Anxiety Disorder Stats Anxiety disorders affect about 40 million American adults age 18 years and older (about 18%) in a given year Women are 60% more likely than men to experience an anxiety disorder over their lifetime A large, national survey of adolescent mental health reported that about 8 percent of teens ages 13–18 have an anxiety disorder, with symptoms commonly emerging around age 6. However, of these teens, only 18 percent received mental health care

Phobia A strong, irrational fear of something specific, such as heights or social situations – Natural environment phobias, such as being afraid of storms or lightning – Animal phobias, such as being afraid of spiders or dogs – Blood-injection-injury phobias, such as being afraid of blood or getting a shot (injection) – Situational phobias, such as being afraid of elevators or bridges – Other phobias, such as being afraid of choking or throwing up. OCD Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Persistent thoughts, fears, or urges (obsessions) leading to uncontrollable repetitive behaviors (compulsions). For example, the fear of germs leads to constant hand washing. These compulsions are called “Rituals”

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Stats There are also at least 1 in 200 – or 500,000 – kids and teens that have OCD. This is about the same number of kids who have diabetes. That means that in a medium to large high school, there could be 20 students struggling with the challenges caused by OCD. Tourettes Syndrome or Chronic Tick Disorder Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder characterized by repetitive, stereotyped, involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics.neurological Tourettes Syndrome (motor and audible ticks) Chronic Tick Disorder (either motor OR audible ticks)

Body Dysmorphic Disorder Body dysmorphic disorder is defined by an obsession with an imagined defect in physical appearance, and compulsive rituals in an attempt to conceal the perceived defect Common Rituals: mirror checking, ritualized application of makeup to hide the perceived flaw, excessive hair combing or cutting, excessive physician visits and plastic surgery.

Panic Disorder People with panic disorder have sudden and repeated attacks of fear that last for several minutes Panic attacks are characterized by a fear of disaster or of losing control even when there is no real danger. A person may also have a strong physical reaction during a panic attack. It may feel like having a heart attack. Panic attacks can occur at any time, and many people with panic disorder worry about and dread the possibility of having another attack.

Symptoms of a Panic Disorder Sudden and repeated attacks of fear A feeling of being out of control during a panic attack An intense worry about when the next attack will happen A fear or avoidance of places where panic attacks have occurred in the past Physical symptoms during an attack, such as a pounding or racing heart, sweating, breathing problems, weakness or dizziness, feeling hot or a cold chill, tingly or numb hands, chest pain, or stomach pain.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder A condition that may develop after exposure to a terrifying event. Causes: Fighting in a War, Car Accident, Near Death Experience, Physical Trauma, Abuse, Etc

PTSD Facts PTSD can be triggered in a moment by a memory, an image, a sound, or even smell PTSD can often lead to alcohol and drug abuse, and domestic violence. 18 veterans commit suicide each day. 126 each week. 6,552 each year. 1 out of 5 veterans experience or will experience symptoms of PTSD

Generalized Anxiety Disorder Exaggerated worry and tension for no reason. People with GAD startle easily and have difficulty concentrating, relaxing, and sleeping.

Symptoms of GAD Physical symptoms – Fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, irritability, sweating, nausea, lightheadedness, Loss of Sleep Lack of Concentration Persistent Fearfulness

Generalized Anxiety Disorder GAD affects about 6.8 million American adults, including twice as many women as men. The disorder develops gradually and can begin at any point in the life cycle, although the years of highest risk are between childhood and middle age. hvkY hvkY
