Current Issues in Sport National Governing Bodies

Learning Outcomes Be able to describe the organisation of NGBs Be able to explain the organisation of NGBs

Key National Organisations In the late 1890s, sports governing bodies were set up to organise, control and develop sports e.g. Rugby Football Union (RFU) In the 1990s some new bodies were set up to control and develop sport in a more strategic way e.g. UK Sport

Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Funds Sport England Supports UK Sport and the National Lottery £36 million to Sports Unlimited June 2008 published ‘playing to win’ which set out to become a world leading sporting nation Why?

Central Council of Physical Recreation (CCPR) Oldest sporting body Formed in 1935 due to the fact that PE was a low priority and children were not healthy enough Children were leaving school at 14

UK Sport One of the UK’s newest sports organisations formed in 1997 Aim is to attain world class success Responsible for managing and distributing public investment Q. Can you think of an example? UK’ sport mission is ‘to work in partnership to lead sport in the UK to world-class success’

UK Sport Established by Royal Charter in 1997, UK Sport is responsible for investing around £100 million of public funds each year – from both the National Lottery– in high performance sport Accountable to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), UK Sport has a very clear remit at the ‘top end’ of Britain’s sporting pathway, with no direct involvement in community or school sport Based in London, it employs around 90 staff and is overseen by the UK Sport Board, comprising home country representatives and independent members, which meets every two months

Core Responsibilities Performance UK Sport is the strategic lead body for high performance sport in the UK. It invests National Lottery funds in Britain’s best Olympic and Paralympic sports and athletes to maximise their chances of success on the world stage. For London and beyond, a third stream of private sector funding - Team complements this public investment Using a ‘No Compromise’ philosophy which targets investment at those most likely to deliver medals at Olympic and Paralympic level, UK Sport works with each sport to provide the best possible support for athletes, providing everything they need from world- class coaches to cutting edge research and innovation, talent identification and Performance Lifestyle support What are the strengths and weaknesses from this?

Gold Event Series The Gold Event Series is UK Sport’s major events programme for the period , and has been developed to help NGBs attract and stage some of the most important international sporting events to the UK, following the successful hosting of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Through the Gold Event Series, UK Sport will invest over £27m of National Lottery funding to help support the bidding and staging of major international sporting events up to A comprehensive range of new and expanded support services will also be provided to ensure that major events hosted in the UK are delivered to a world-leading standard

Sport Wales National organisation responsible for developing and promoting sport and recreation. It was established in 1972 Distributes lottery funds to sport in wales Q. Can you think of anywhere that has achieved lottery funding in North Wales? Main focus is to increase frequency of participation by encouragement

Sport England  Its focus is 3 outcomes: 1.Increase sports participation 2.Sustain these numbers 3.Improve talent development  Targets: 1.£1 million people taking part in more sport 2.More children and young people taking part in 5 hours of PE and sport a week 3.Decrease the number of year olds dropping out of sport 4.Improve talent development in 25 sports

Sport Scotland  Mission is ‘to encourage everyone in Scotland to discover and develop their own sporting experience, helping to increase participation (60% by 2020) and improve performances in Scottish sport’  Runs the Scottish Institute of Sport  Distributes lottery funds and Government money for sports development  Supports deprived groups and areas for sporting opportunities

Sport Northern Ireland  Describes itself as the lead facilitator for Sport in NI  Aims to increase and sustain its commitment to participation  Raise standards of sporting excellence  Promote a good reputation of sport  Increase and sustain sport participation  Improve leadership skills amongst coaches and volunteers

National Governing Bodies  Organisations aiming to promote and develop a particular sport  Almost every sport has a NGB  One example is Welsh Netball Association 1.Increase coaches and volunteers 2.Increase the development of Netball 3.Increase tournaments and festivals 4.Young players being talent ID

TASK What does your NGB do for your sport? Has it effected you in any way?
