1. 3.1.3 – Making informed decisions; Further School influences Learning objectives To understand the PESSCL strategy aims. To be able to describe the purpose of a sports college. To describe the gifted and talented programme. To understand the focus of organisations such as the Youth Sport Trust and Step into Sport.

2. The government have invested large sums of money into the PE, School Sport and Club Links strategy (PESSCL). PESSCL TASK: Research the PE, School Sport and Club Links strategy (PESSCL) and find out the aims and progress. The aim of the PESSCL strategy is to increase the number of 5-16 year olds taking up sport and remaining involved throughout their lives. It is also has a target of 85% of schoolchildren to take part in a minimum of 2 hours of high quality PE time.

The PESSCL has 9 links: Sports Colleges: Promote sport in the borough School sport partnerships: To create greater involvement Professional development: improve quality of teaching and coaching QCA’s PESS strategy: Guide school how to improve Swimming: To improve swimming provisions in schools Sporting Playgrounds: improve and modernising children’s play space Gifted and Talented: improve talent spotting and the opportunities they receive. Club links: increase membership of clubs Step into sport: aimed at 14-19 year olds (leadership awards)

4. Sport is 1 of 10 different specialism's schools can apply for. Sports colleges act a flagships to show other schools the way forward for school sport. They promote excellence in PE and run government initiatives throughout the surrounding area. Specialist Sports Colleges

5. The G & T programme aim to improve the identification and development of young potential. Gifted and talented programme Benchmarking excellence. Talent identification. Guidelines are available to help teachers spot talented individuals. Support for talented athletes. Help is available to balance school work and training. Multi-skilled academies have been setup to help young people develop core skills.

6. Step into sport The Youth Sport Trust deliver this programme and aim to help 14-19 year olds start and stay involved in sports leadership and volunteering. Roles include coaching, managing, officiating and administrative work.

7. Youth Sport Trust TOP Programme: This programme aims to provide the best opportunities in PE for a range of pupils from 18 months to 18 years old. This schemes provides school based awards to obtain for pupils. Teachers and coaches are also guided via TOP resources.

8. TOP Link: (Step into Sport) This gives young people a chance to be sport leaders and to organise and run small festivals and tournaments. This is a pathway to the SPORTS LEDAERS AWARDS (SLUK). They will need to: -Coach -Officiate -Team manage and organise

9. Swimming provisions Swimming forms a part of the PESSCL strategy. Not only is a healthy active but an important life skill. At key stage 2 pupils should be able to swim 25 metres independently.

10. Coaching opportunities In order for schools to deliver the necessary 2 hours of PE to pupils some schools bring in external coaches. The government recognise the shortage of good-quality coaches and have launch a framework in 2008 aimed at developing coaches across a range of sports.

11. PESSYP PESSYP is the Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young People. This aims of this organisation are to create the best system for PE and sport for young people. Increasing access to a wider range of sports can be achieved through club links, coaching, extending activities and through the correct infrastructure.
