5 What is the School Games? The Government’s policy for School Sport A strategic priority for the coalition government Funded by the DfE, DH, DCMS and Sport England Lottery Funding with outcomes across School, Health and Sport

6 School Games: Summary INTRA SCHOOL COMPETITION (L1) Year round, multi-sport programme of intra school competition Culminating in a School Games Day INTER SCHOOL COMPETITION (L2 – L3) Year round, multi-sport programme of inter school competition (L2) Culminating in a School Games Festival (L3) MOST TALENTED YOUNG PEOPLE (L4) Single national level multi- sport event for the most talented young people of school age Competition programme limited to a number of sports (12 in 2012)

Ensure provision for young disabled people to access School Games and stage local events. Ensure development of a cultural component to the School Games Develop a workforce of Active Lifestyle Coaches to engage least active young people Provide access to specialist coaches, training and equipment – lunchtime/after school programmes Support young people to access quality coaching, higher level competition and move into clubs.
