What is the subjunctive? A mood – how you mean something to come across It is used when you are not sure of the outcome of the situation, you have no control over it, and it is totally subjective (NOT objective)

Requirements for subjunctive Two different subjects A connector word (we have learned “QUE”) Two different verbs – one in the present indicative and one in the present subjunctive S1V1 que S2V2 Mi madre espera que yo reciba buenas notas. My mom hopes that I receive good grades.

We already learned that you should use the subjunctive when you want, desire, or recommend that somebody else do something, because you have no control over whether that actually happens or not.

Subjuntivo con verbos de emoción You can also use the subjunctive with verbs of emotion: I’m happy that you have the job. It’s a pity that she doesn’t pay attention to you.
