INTRO TO FINDING INFORMATION

What about Google? Have to be very careful with web searches – Searches based on spelling, not concepts – Who wrote it? Is it scholarly? Authoritative? Objective? – Who (or what) determines what results you see? Click screenshot to play

Background Questions Ask for general knowledge about a disorder, often addressing normal human physiology and pathophysiology associated with a specific condition Can often be answered by textbooks or narrative review articles Have 2 essential components – A question root (who, what, where, when, how, why) with a verb – A disorder or aspect of a disorder

Examples What is _____? What causes ____? When do complications of __________ occur? What are the side effects of ____________? How do you diagnosis ___________? What treatment options are available for ___? More Info here:

Found in…E-Books Access Medicine Collection of reference books: – Clinician’s Pocket Reference: The Scut Monkey – CURRENT Diagnosis & Treatment (many topics) – Fitzpatrick’s Dermatology Also…drug monographs, diagnostic tests manuals, procedural videos, self-assessment, patient ed, etc.

Clinical Key Collection of medical & surgical reference books, including: – Conn’s Current Therapy 2015 – Ferri’s Clinical Advisor 2015 – Goldman’s Cecil Medicine – Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics Also…drug information, practice guidelines, patient handouts, etc.

Browse Books by Specialties, e.g. Medical Education

Once you go home … you are not alone How can a librarian help you? Review the library resources available to you Troubleshoot issues with library resources or technologies, e.g. “How do I download the DynaMed app?” Consult on search strategies for your various assignments Can meet online via Adobe Connect – share screens so it’s easier to follow each other We will guide you to the information you need, but will not do the searches for you!

UND medical librarians are located in four quadrants of ND

We’ll talk about: – finding articles for your assignments using library databases Which ones are available and how to choose between them – evidence-based medicine and the tools available to you to find it more efficiently
