1 Welcome to Getting Started with LIS Library & Information Services (LIS)

2 Opening Hours / Your uniCARD ►The Library is open 24/6 during term time ►The Help desk is open 09:00 - 18:00, Monday to Friday ►Go to: www.aston.ac.uk/library/openinghourswww.aston.ac.uk/library/openinghours ►Your uniCARD is your Library Card. You will need it at all times to: ►Gain entry to the Library ►Borrow books ►Borrow and return a laptop ►Collect your printing / photocopies

3 Self service facilities ►Borrow and return books, pay Library fines. Laptops ►Available to borrow from the Ground Floor ►Wireless Internet Computers ►There are over 150 computers (first come, first served) ►Login with your Aston University username and password. 11 printers and photocopiers in the Library ►Print from Library Computers to anywhere in the University ►Printers on each floor of the Library ►2 colour printers – 1 on Ground Floor and 1 on 2nd Floor.

4 Studying in the Library A range of study spaces Ground Floor – a social study space with whiteboards. You can eat and drink on Ground Floor but please keep drinks sealed and no hot food to be brought into the Library ►Ground Floor and 1st Floor – group study space, rooms for practising presentations and an assistive technology room (DANU) ►2nd Floor – group study most of the year ►3rd Floor – single silent study. ►Student lift available ►Toilets on every floor. You can use your phone on the Ground Floor and stairwells. Please do not disturb others by using mobile phones on the upper floors.

5 Key facts – Library regulations Please make sure you check the Library regulations on the web site. ►Entrance to the Library is by swipe access with your uniCARD ►Please do not lend your uniCARD to anyone else or borrow anyone else’s card ►Please remember to issue all Library materials before you leave the building ►Keep your uniCARD on you at all times

6 Finding books in the Library ►Search for books using: ►Library SmartSearch on the web site or ►Library Catalogue terminals in the Library ►Make a note of the call number / class number and the floor ►Go up to the floor and check the posters on the end of the shelves to find the book ►Get the book off the shelf and issue it, using a self service machine on the Ground Floor.

7 Finding books on your reading lists Each module that you study will have a list of recommended reading which may include books or journal articles. ►Reading Lists should be on Blackboard within the individual modules ►You should find a link to the Library Catalogue and a printable Reading List you can refer to ►You may also find that there are links to journal articles or PDFs of book chapters. ►If no list is available please contact your lecturer and alert the Library.

8 Do I need to buy books for my course? ►LIS will have copies of all books on Reading Lists as well as additional background material ►Due to financial constraints as well as space issues we are not able to purchase enough books for all students taking a module ►Your lecturer will tell you which is the key text for the module, if there is one – YOU SHOULD BUY A COPY OF THE KEY TEXT.
