Crisis Management at FHSU Rewrote Crisis Protocols in ’07 – Crisis Team Review / Directive from KBOR Policy Drafts: – Workplace Safety – Timely Notifications – Building Evacuations – Multi-Disciplinary Threat Assessment Team – Missing Student

Threat Assessment Existing crisis plan has protocols for avoiding or mitigating threats – Action Plan for Dangerous or Threatening Behavior – Withdrawal from and re-admission to the University – Action Plan for Assessment of Non-behavioral Threats – Action Plan/Post Event Intervention/Family Assistance Center

Threat Assessment Multidisciplinary Threat Assessment Team has been created to revise threat assessment protocol

Campus Safety / Timely Warnings Clery Act mandates timely warnings to campus community – Crimes reported to UPD or HPD that is of a serious or continuing threat University system, or UPD website ( Emergency Notification System – May be used for immediate threat

How Will I Be Notified? Emergency notification system – In the case of emergencies on campus that pose an imminent threat, everyone who has provided emergency contact information will receive an immediate alert by telephone, text message and . After receiving such a notification, people are advised to watch the FHSU webpage or tune in to local television & / or radio stations for more information. – To provide your contact information, please go to TigerTracks, log in, and go to the Contact Information page under the Online Services tab. Enter your emergency telephone number and address. TigerTracks

Missing Student Emergency contact information is collected in Tiger Tracks FHSU required to notify University Police Department, emergency contact person, and attempt to contact missing person once student is deemed missing FHSU is required to notify parents if the student is under 18 years of age

Residential Life Building Fire Alarm Evacuations Residential facilities will conduct evacuation drills at least annually. When a Fire is discovered – Remain calm and isolate the fire by closing doors – Pull a fire alarm station – Evacuate the building, move a safe distance from the building, and call – Remain outside until allowed in by the fire, police, or Res Life Staff

Academic Building Fire Alarm Evacuations When a Fire is discovered – Remain calm and isolate the fire by closing doors – Pull a fire alarm station – Evacuate the building, move a safe distance from the building, and call – Remain outside until allowed in by the fire or police department Evacuation plans are located on the website:

Severe Weather Shelter in Place Seek cover at shelter in place locations during severe weather or tornado activity Know where to go for buildings you frequently spend time in and University procedures for severe weather Shelter in place locations are posted on the website:

Active Shooter In the event of an active shooter, consider your options and determine the best course of action – First and foremost, evacuate to a position of safety, if not: – Can you stay where you are and secure yourself from the shooter (lock the door, hide somewhere) – If confronted by the shooter, can you shield yourself or take action to protect yourself

Active Shooter (cont.) All situations are different and there is no one answer or correct action to all situations Do the best that you can to remain calm Call to provide information about your location and the shooter(s) Take the actions that you think is the best for you in your particular situation

Active Shooter (cont.) Responding officers will take actions to eliminate or at least reduce the risk They may be dressed in patrol or tactical uniforms or may be simply wearing vests that say “POLICE” They will usually be in groups of Do as they say and provide information they ask for or that may be relevant

What Do I Do If I Witness a Violent or Dangerous Act? Call the police at 911. Notify your supervisor. Crisis flowchart can be found at: Protective Orders

To Prepare for Crisis Post and / or store emergency numbers in or by your cell phone or office phone – UPD: – Emergency: 911 – Building Supervisor Make certain you have entered your information for the Emergency Notification System Enter the Emergency Notification System phone number into your cell phone so you will recognize the number if it calls ( ). (Will not accept incoming calls). Contact your service provider for information on how to enable your phone to ring, even when it is on vibrate or off.

To Prepare for Crisis Print crisis protocols for easy access – Bomb threat checklist – Know your role! Know your building supervisor Remain aware of your surroundings Prepare an office emergency kit – Flashlight, portable radio, spare batteries, first aid kit.

When in Doubt… Report suspicious situations to your immediate supervisor. If you feel a situation is an emergency, call 911. Again, human life is of the paramount concern.
