5.  It CAN happen here!  “A crisis is an event that is extraordinary. It cannot be predicted…”  “A crisis is a situation where school personnel could be faced with inadequate information, time and resources”  The leaders must make one or many crucial decisions. USDOE 2003, p. 1-5

6.  Parent Volunteers  Non-faculty Club Moderators  Booster Members including Board Members  Parent’s Association Members  Anyone who is required to have STAND training to work with our students.

7. HUMAN HAZARDS TECHNOLOGY/NATURAL HAZARDS  Active Shooter  Hostage/Barricade  Death/Suicide  Intruders  Weather Disturbance  Tornado  Thunderstorm  Plane Down  Fire/Gas Response

8.  Lock Down  Secure ALL areas of the building to protect students & Staff.  This is when the danger exists inside the building.  If outside, do not try to re-enter the building.  Staff who are outside should be prepared to exercise an Independent Response and direct students appropriately.

9.  Secure the Building –  There is a threat outside of the school that could affect the school.  This could involve a person that police are seeking that has been determined to be dangerous or a suspicious person reported by staff.  A “secure the building” could be followed by “lockdown.”  All exterior doors are ensured to be locked and no one enters or leaves the building until the situation is resolved. Normal educational activities may take place (class changes, lunch, inside athletics).  Situation: Threat is outside the building.

10.  Independent Response  Warning to staff that a threat exists in the facility or grounds that may require individuals to exercise individual decision making to make ensure safety of themselves and students in their charge.  Normally used as a secondary response after a lock down  Common Situations where this may be appropriate  Active Shooter  Hostage/barricade situation  Natural disasters that cause damage or injury including earthquakes, tornado, hurricanes, and floods  Death or suicide at school  Plane crash near school

11.  All Clear  Inform occupants that the emergency has been resolved.

12.  In the unlikely event that a person who appears to be a threat or has a weapon, enters the facility, or is observed in the immediate area of an event, the following actions should be taken:  Volunteer OR staff become aware of the presence of an intruder who appears to pose a danger  Immediate call placed to 911 via cell phone or 9-911 for school phone  Locate an after school administrator (AD, Athletic Trainer or other prominent responsible personnel) and initiate a response  Reassess situation if possible. Take additional actions to protect life to include partial evacuation if appropriate  Independent Response

13. INCIDENT TYPEINCIDENT RESPONSE  Interior Active Shooter  Hostage/Barricade  Armed Intruder  Suicide/Death  These will require a LOCKDOWN and/or an Independent Response  Lock Down Procedures  1. Lock all doors to the room you are in. Maintenance locks exterior doors.  2. Pull down window shades, turn off lights, and move students away from windows.  3. Do not to admit any students after lock down announcement.  4. Do not open door until all clear is given.  5. Administrators sweep for students in corridors and man exterior doors.

14. INCIDENT TYPERESPONSE  Exterior Active Shooter  Exterior Armed Intruder  Exterior Hostage/Barricade  Secure the Building  Proceed to the nearest lockable facility  Begin to lockdown  Execute Independent Response as needed  Await All Clear before exiting

15. INCIDENTRESPONSE  Weather  Tornado  Thunderstorm  Shelter in place  Secure yourself in a safe location  Await all clear  Ensure the area is safe for sheltering

16. INCIDENTRESPONSE  Fire  Gas Leak  Plane Down  Hazardous Materials Incident  Evacuate quickly to a safe zone at least 100 yards from the area of the incident  A HazMat incident may require a shelter in place to avoid contact with airborne toxins

17. IDENTIFICATION OF HAZARD SELECT RESPONSE  Weather  Technological  Armed threat  Consider each response  Lockdown  Secure the Building  Use *8 and announce appropriate response  Call 9-911 from school phone or 911 from cell  Maintain safety of your students
