Determinants of youth health Youth health and development are affected by many factors (determinants): – Biological – Behavioural – Physical environment – Social environment (family) – Social environment (community)

Biological determinants Factors that depend on biology, such as: – genes – body weight – hormones

Behavioural determinants Factors related to behaviour, lifestyle, choices and decisions, such as: – Exercising regularly – Choosing healthy foods – Using UV protection – Avoiding substances such as tobacco and alcohol – Engaging in safe sex – Developing and maintaining relationships – Seeking help from professionals, when necessary

Physical environment Factors related to where we live, work or spend most of our time, such as: – Safe physical environment – Fresh food – Clean water – Home free of tobacco smoke – Clean, safe and welcoming home – Access to sporting and recreational facilities

Social environment – family and community Factors related to family, friends and social interactions such as: – Family cohesion – Socioeconomic status of parents – Community participation – Access to education
