2 Objective The learner will learn the important breeds of swine in the US swine industry The learner will learn facts about each breeds

3 Words to Know Barrow – castrated male pig
Sow – female pig that has had a litter of pigs Boar – male pig intended for reproduction Gilt – female pig that has not given birth to a litter of pigs Litter – a group of piglets from one sow Farrow – the act of giving birth Prolific – the ability to reproduce rapidly

4 Parts of the Pig

5 Terminal Breeds The offspring of Terminal Sires are used mainly for meat production Usually they have large loin-eyes, thick hams, and lean carcasses Bred to efficiently convert feed into pound of product (meat)

6 Berkshire Originated in England One of the oldest breeds of swine
Black with six white points Erect ears

7 Hampshire Originated in England Major development in Kentucky
Known as the “Thin Rind” Erect ears

8 Duroc Developed in New Jersey and New York Red in color
Known for there high average daily gain Droopy ears

9 Chester White Developed in Chester County, Pennsylvania
Known for there bacon production Droopy ears

10 Spot Developed in Indiana
At least 20% of the hog must be either black or white Droopy ears

11 Poland China Developed in Ohio Black with six white points Droopy ears

12 Pietrain Developed in Belgium and Germany
Used in cross-breeding programs They have muscular hams and loins Many are PSS carriers

13 Maternal Breeds The Maternal Breeds have characteristics that make them good mothers They produce large quantities of milk, can raise large litters of pigs, and they have natural mothering ability

14 Landrace Developed in Denmark Known to raise large litters
White in color Long droopy ears

15 Yorkshire Developed in England Known for their high milk production
White in color Large erect ears

16 Other Breeds These breeds have little to no economical value to the swine industry Most of the time breed as a Hobby

17 Hereford Developed in the US
Used Duroc, Poland China, and Chester White breeds to develop the breed Red with white head, legs, and tail Known for their foraging ability

18 Tamworth Developed in England Red with erect ears
Known for their grazing ability

19 Mulefoot Hog Preserved in the US Almost extinct
Known for their Mule like foot
