2. The Ancient Israelites Shape a Unique Belief System
v     The Israelites were monotheistic, believing in 1 god.
v     Torah, their most sacred text.
v     Other laws & customs were written down in the Talmud.

     2000 B.C.–Abraham migrates: Mesopotamia to Canaan, creates Israelite nation.
     God made a covenant w/ Abraham: 1. God’s chosen people 2. The land of Canaan promised land

5. v     Famine: Israelites migrate to Egypt--enslaved.
Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt (The Exodus)

Scriptures say 430 years.

7. Moses and Mt. Sinai
Moses meets God here and receives the 10 commandments during the third month of Exodus.

8. The Kingdom of Israel Est
Promised Land
1000 B.C. 12 separate tribes united by David into the kingdom of Israel.
Solomon, son of David, built the capital at Jerusalem.

9.      922 B.C.–Kingdom splits into Israel and Judah.
     722 B.C.–Assyrians conquer Israel.
     586 B.C.–Babylonians capture Judah Babylonian Captivity.
    539 BC Persian ruler Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon and freed the Jews.

10. Teachings on Law and Morality
It was a patriarchal, men held the greatest legal & moral authority.
Torah address all aspects of life, from cleanliness and food preparation to criminal matters.

11.  God set of laws called the Ten Commandments.
     Jewish prophets, preached a code of ethics, or moral standards of behavior.
  Examples: The rich and powerful must protect the poor and weak.
All people are equal under God.

     For 70 years during the Babylonian Captivity, many Jews left their homeland for different areas, this spreading was the Diaspora.
