SPAG WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

What is SPaG? ◦ Spelling ◦ Punctuation ◦ And ◦ Grammar

Why the focus? ◦ In 2012, Mr Gove introduced a SPaG test at the end of KS2 (Year 6). Previously SPaG was assessed as part of the writing test, but this is now teacher assessed. ◦ In the same year, a Phonics Screening check was introduced for Year 1 children. ◦ In 2016, children in Years 2 and 6 will be completing the new SPaG assessments, in line with the National Curriculum ◦ National Curriculum 2014 has clear expectations for SPaG in all year groups. These need to be taught.

The Abbey Gates approach… ◦ SPaG is taught discretely in all year groups from Y1-6 throughout the week. ◦ Children’s targets are SPaG related for English- these appear on children’s books. ◦ Rising Stars half termly assessments in Punctuation, Vocabulary and Grammar and in Spelling carried out in Years 1-6. ◦ Daily phonics in Foundation and KS1 ◦ When teaching writing, vocabulary and grammar techniques are modelled as part of the writing process.
