PHONICS SCREENING Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. Children have a daily taught session of phonics that teaches the children to recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes, building up to identifying the different contributions of letters make such as ‘sh’, ‘oo’. The National phonics screening check is a statutory assessment that was introduced in 2012 to all Year 1 pupils. The test will take place the week beginning 13 th June 2016.

PHONICS SCREENING It comprises of a list of 40 words and nonsense words. Your child will read these words one to one with their teacher. see phonics screening test example in your packs.

What will you see today? Shared Writing Guided Writing Session Independent Activities

Supporting Writing at Home

What you can do to support your child at home… Good writing starts with lots of talk! Spend 10 minutes a day reading with your child. Talk about the pictures and characters and make up your own stories. Talk about the phonemes in the book and explore tricky words, trying to make clear which letters make which sounds. Ensure children know what the spelling pattern is every week and look for that in your books at home. If you have time, you might write the weekly spellings in a sentence, drawing attention to the spelling rule. Look at texts around you – cereal packets, advertisements, catalogues, stories. Use the handwriting guidance when children are practising writing their spellings. Look carefully at how your child forms their letters starting and ending at the correct place.

National Curriculum Standards In your packs you will also have a list of common exception words, your child must be able to spell and write these by the end of Year One. By the end of Year one your children will need to be able to use these words when talking about their writing and what they read. Letter Capital letter Word Singular Plural Sentence Punctuation Full stop Question mark Exclamation mark

ASSESSMENT All change! Levels are no longer in place. We are working with Year group national expectations. All children will be at a different place within this national expectation at different parts of the year – this reflects how unique your child is. All children in Year One will be working towards achieving a secure understanding of Year One curriculum content by the end of the year. We will report this to you as working towards, meeting or exceeding national expectations.
