5. Changes to the National Curriculum Mrs Evans Much more challenging than the previous curriculum! By the end of each year, children are expected to learn objectives which may have previously been taught to the year group above. Example 1 In Maths, by the end of Year 4 all children are expected to learn all of their times tables up to 12 x 12. Emphasis on problem solving and reasoning. Example 2 In English, by the end of Year 2, all children are expected to be able to correctly use apostrophes for possession.

6. What are we doing about it? Mrs Evans Last year we started teaching to the New objectives. Every child has been working hard to ‘ catch up’ and not only learn the NEW objectives but they have also been trying to learn the other objectives they would normally learn going into the year above. Work is still varied for children of different abilities and your child will still be able to achieve success in their learning. If children feel confident, they can push themselves on with their learning and choose a more difficult challenge. Similarly, if work is too challenging, children can select a more appropriate challenge/activity. We have a Bronze, Silver, Gold and Star challenge in most of our lessons. Please be assured that this is closely monitored.

9. Reception baseline assessments Mrs Jennings Why are we assessing 4 year olds? We have always assessed children on entry to school. It plays an important part in helping us, parents and carers to recognise children’s progress, understand their needs and plan activities and support. The Department for Education are introducing a National baseline assessment for all children on entry into school, which will provide a recognised starting point for measuring development and progress through Reception and it will demonstrate a clear link to outcomes at the end of KS1 and KS2. What does it look like? We have chosen The Early Excellence Baseline Assessment because it is a practitioner led assessment, which builds on the requirements of The Early Years Foundation Stage. It does not involve any pre-set tests or tasks. It is based on observations and interactions with children through self-initiated play, small group activities and adult directed activities.

This assessment tells us if the children are working WB, B, E, A or WA. With some of the assessments it only tells us B, E or A (Explained later).
