January Kindly contributed by Carrie Bray. Search for Carrie on and visit the download page for this resource to find further links and related resources. Teaching note. Strictly speaking only co-ordinating conjunctions are used to create compound sentences. There are only 7 co-ordinating conjunctions: for and nor but or yet so (FANBOYS). The subordinating conjunction because (and its alternative as and since) is included here as it is commonly used as an example conjunction from Entry 2 upwards.

Warm Up Get into pairs and draw up a list of punctuation rules. Include rules for: Capital letters Full stops Commas Question marks Exclamation marks Any other punctuation you think is important

Learning Outcomes Today you will: Write in complete sentences Punctuate correctly, so meaning is clear Use a capital letter for proper nouns Spell correctly a range of common words Check your spelling of last week’s words

Conjunctions Conjunctions are joining words. Examples include: asorsoandbutsince because Use a conjunction to join two simple sentences. Example: He wants his hair coloured. He’s allergic to some of the dyes. He wants a colour but he’s allergic to some of the dyes. Two sentences joined together like this become a compound sentence.

Client Details You jot down these phone messages. Turn them into full sentences for the stylists. Use conjunctions in some of your sentences. asorsoandbutsince because Maxwell, 47, crew cut or grade 2, new customer. Tracy, 29, hair cut, colour, blow dry for party tonight. Mabel, 78, rinse and set, likes copy of People’s Friend to read when under dryer. Raoul, 21, allergic to peroxide, wants highlights, unsure of style / colour. Angela, 43, wants perm, very fine hair, very brittle hair, needs split ends trimming. May, 81, lonely (widowed last year), likes a chat, set, cup of tea. Marcus, 34, last minute appointment (job interview), dry cut.

Purposely blank Sample answers on next page
