2 Year 1 The children will learn regular plural suffixes –s or – es. For example dog, dogs wish, wishes The children will learn about suffixes that can be added to verbs where no change is needed to the root word, For example help, helping, helped, helper The children will learn how the prefix un- changes the meaning of a word For example kind, unkind tie, untie

3 Year 1 The children will learn how words combine to make sentences.
The children will learn how to use joining words and how to join clauses together using and. For example I went to the shop and I bought an apple. The children will sequence sentences to form short narratives.

4 Year 1 Punctuation In Year 1 the focus is separation of words with spaces, the introduction of capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. The children will learn to use capital letters for names and for I.

5 Year 2 The children understand how prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of a word. The children will learn what a compound word is. For example class + room = classroom The suffixes used increase so children will add –ness, -er, -ful, -less, ly or est to a root word. They will learn to apply different rules. For example, the word rub has a short vowel sound followed by a consonant therefore the rule is double the last letter and add ed to make rubbed.

6 Year 2 In Year 2 the children will join two main clauses to create a compound sentence. The focus is on the conjunction used and making the correct choice. For example, When I go to school today I will need my PE kit. I have PE. When I go to school today I will need my PE kit because I have PE.

7 Year 2 What is an expanded noun phrase? The butterfly
The blue butterfly The children must recognise and write different forms of sentences. We teach the children what a statement is, a question, exclamation and command.

8 Year 2 The children have to write consistently in the present or past tense in their piece of work. Punctuation They will use capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks to demarcate sentences. The children will be taught how to use commas correctly to separate items in a list. For example My favourite colours are red, blue, purple and silver.

9 Year 2 The children will be taught how to use an apostrophe to show where missing letters are. For example I have not got a pen. I haven’t got a pen. They will also learn how to use an apostrophe for possession in nouns. For example The book is Lucy’s.

14 Year 3 The children understand how prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of a word. The children will add prefixes like anti- and auto-. The children will use a or an according to whether the next word begins with a consonant or a vowel. For example A rock An open box

15 Year 3 In Year 3 the children will develop their sentences by using conjunctions like when, before, after, while, so or because. The children will be introduced to paragraphs and will understand when and why to start a new paragraph. The children will use the present perfect form of verbs instead of the simple past. For example, He has gone out to play. He went out to play.

16 Year 3 Punctuation The children will be introduced to inverted commas to punctuate direct speech.

17 Year 4 In Year 4 the children will learn about Standard English forms. For example, We were instead of we was. I did instead of I done The children will develop the use of expanded noun phrases. For example, The teacher is expanded to the strict maths teacher with curly hair.

18 Year 4 The children will use paragraphs in their writing and organise them around a theme. Punctuation The children will use inverted commas to punctuate direct speech. They will use different punctuation correctly including apostrophes.
