1 MICE PM Report General Update –Phase I nearing completion –MICE Power –Actions for Decay solenoid & target –Follow-ups from last VC –Conclusions MICE Video Conference, 18 th December, 2008

2 Phase One nearing completion Shield walls complete and painted All mezzanines & galleries are complete False floor making good progress –All fabrication is complete and delivered –Installation in Hall is about 30% done – a few minor hold-ups with drilling the floor –Aim to complete early January (not critical path) Rolling platforms 1 & 7 are complete, tested and delivered Smoke detection, lighting upgrade and fire alarms delayed, regrettable, but not critical –Work is currently under tender by BPG –Hope to get started in January Main door replacement crucial for PPS installation –ISIS have reservations – urgently need to understand! Two RF amplifiers are on their way from CERN to DL

MICE Power By December 2009, MICE will need a power upgrade to run Eventually this needs to be 2MVA for Step VI But it’s fallen through the cracks so far! DL staff have made a suitable costed technical plan, about £75K It involves a transformer and other components in the MICE hall or on the roof – needs about 24m^2 It will be an STFC, but non-MICE cost A ready-made critical path topic, as the transformer lead time is 30 weeks!

Actions for Decay solenoid & target Target –Robust plan now in place to deliver redesigned targets by next Spring –Mechanical and electromagnetic studies of failed target did not reveal a ‘smoking gun’, but: –We are redesigning the shaft/bearing and their interfaces –Time available dictates that we keep to titanium shaft, but of cylindrical section –But there might be opportunities for better particle production using alternative materials, eg, beryllium, carbon – but for the longer term Target workshop/review with ISIS arranged for 8 th January

Actions for Decay Solenoid & Target Cooldown & fault diagnosis continues: –Solenoid seems to be accepting higher currents than before, but still has same type of problem –All Ten coils appear superconducting, so fault might be elsewhere –Long term logging of various voltage taps being done –Some problem with connector in quench protection circuitry – news as of yesterday – need to warm up if to be fixed Shutdown plan agreed by TB on Monday: –Continue cooling and diagnosis over Christmas –Mike C to co-opt and train semi-experts and liaise with ISIS crew –Synchrotron beamstop to go ahead as planned –Cold mass withdrawal tooling to be completed and tested

Follow-ups from last VC RF infrastructure: –Need to progress the configuration plan LH2 project: –Good progress –R&D hardware manufacturers have been visited, they’ve re-started –Control system philosophy and SIL compatibility now clearer – almost ready to involve rest of project –Permission for recruitment given by STFC, advert ready to go out –Graduate engineer process starts 5 th January –AN will work with LH2 group to make new Gantt chart with all the above AFC modules –Coil former re-design will have some adverse effect on schedule, not quite sure how much yet

Conclusion Thanks to everybody for their help this year –The visible progress and the sense of friendly co- operation has been very gratifying!
