1 MICE PM Report Outcome of Reviews held at CM22 –Motivation for holding them –Outcomes & actions –Observations & follow-ups MICE Video Conference, 20 th November, 2008

2 Motivation During Spring & Summer this year, it became clearer what resources will be available for the UK Phase Two (to step five) project This is primarily the Focus coil modules (2+option 1) But there is a large engineering commitment for infrastructure to support the Phase Two subsystems and to ensure the installation goes smoothly Made a bottom-up estimate of this, which was predictably too high So we got squeezed in the approved fashion The most likely outcome is to spread the expenditure over four years, instead of three Two schedules are in progress: technically-limited Driven by external subsystem milestones (hopefully three years) –And resource-limited Driven by the enforced four year timescale So reviews scheduled to extract project planning data to construct the above

Motivation Four reviews were organised: –RF Power/infrastructure –RFCC PRR –Infrastructure –LH2 system Were held during CM22 –But the AFC PRR took place on November 4 th – provided useful information

Outcomes & Actions Close-out notes of the reviews are posted at: http://www.mice.iit.edu/tb/Reviews Too much detail to cover here, but the main points are as follows: RFCC PRR In good shape for manufacture, no real problems, delivery March/April 2010 Infrastructure Also in good shape: at least the work areas appear to be well-defined (more than we thought). The schedule is clearly dependent on other subsystems though

Outcomes & Actions RF Power Infrastructure Different options for the RF power distribution Various implications for Hall layout and other stuff Andy Moss agreed to present one scheme for agreement among MICE (early December) Then he gets opinion from ‘world’ experts – need an external review at that point (February ‘09?) This decision has to be taken before detailed design is started LH2 system Clearly suffering from reduced manpower R&D hardware needs to be progressed at AS Scientific Control system philosophy needs to be agreed within MICE before we can proceed Internal review for above planned for Jan ‘09 5

Outcomes & Actions LH2 system –LH2 project must be ‘owned’ by somebody –The work content definition should be strengthened –Currently the LH2 timescales are much too loosely defined –But the real problem is lack of effort to work on cryogenic systems in parallel –But a glimmer of hope: ASD Management are accelerating recruitment and PED have permission to get a Graduate Engineer AFC modules –Reasonably straight forward, good progress from FDR –Some problems with coil former being tidied up –Delivery date for AFC#1 November 2009 6

Observations & Follow-ups Based on the review content, the hardware deliveries will be in advance of the resource-limited schedule, so some of them might be gathering dust The LH2 system is the biggest worry, but at least the review allowed us to define the problem and work out the actions Other than that, the subsystems seem to be following their plans AN will try to bring both overall schedules to the CM23 7
