1 MICE PM Report Progress with the Infrastructure A few problems
Planning Phase Two Visitor arrangements MICE Video Conference, 18th September, 2008

2 Progress with the Infrastructure
August and September have been good months! South Shield wall complete, floor plates laid North Wall support structure is about half done Steel plate order is fully delivered and contractual hiccups solved The mound excavation is done and vacuum service ducts installed All infrastructure design work is finished DSA PPS Installation is working Tim & Willie have an aggressive but believable plan for parallel work in Hall – brings civil engineering to close by 24th November This defines the earliest date the tracker readout can be integrated in the Hall

4 A few problems Decay solenoid: Plans:
Summary only, see Mike C’s talk later Various problems with Linde fridge now fixed Coils 1-5 (upstream) confirmed to be superconducting Coils 6-10 (downstream) non-superconducting Plans: Remove end cap of cryostat October (20th-30th) shutdown for detailed fault diagnosis Withdraw half cold mass to expose downstream coils in December/Jan shutdown (18th Dec – 22nd Jan 09) Presumption is that we do not need to dismantle shield wall Tim & Mike are working on detailed plan

5 A few problems Target: Plans: Again a summary – Chris’s talk later:
ISIS target remains reliable, but we only have ~ 60K cycles left of our original agreement Two demonstrator targets have failed, actuator shorted and bearings/shaft seized badly Plans: Demonstrator problems need to be understood and fixed methodically New design and parts need to be made made, on & offline running programme needs to be re-defined and run to enable operable target for Decay solenoid start up (End Jan 2009) – it’s crucial this work has a proper engineering basis But we must not exclude a ground-up re-design of the target project – but the UK itself cannot pay for this

6 A few problems Spectrometer Solenoid Plans and schedule:
See Mike Z’s talk later Magnet no.1 is complete and working but has problems with rad shield and vent pipework Plans and schedule: Shift priority to magnet no.2 Improve thermal path to rad shield and improve vent tubes Finish early November Then field map and shipment – eight weeks Integration at RAL – six weeks So we’ll be running in mid Feb ’09 Magnet no.1 follows these steps but eight weeks behind Even if we postpone FNAL field map, it’s hard to believe we’ll be running this year

7 Planning for Phase Two Blondel, Long, Nichols, Zisman met in early July Discussed the shape of the Phase Two project given the constraints of UK funding It looks like we have a four-year project AN is working (but not very quickly) on both cost and technically-limited versions of the overall schedule Reviews of major subsystems are planned at & around CM in October Milestones from these are vital input to the project plan

8 Visitor arrangements MICE Liaison/admin officer, Rosie Hayes, will start in early November Will be located in R1, second floor Aiming to establish office in R1 for visitor use also Rosie will help with: Induction Accommodation Travel Safety Etc.
