4 Progress since 2007 Starting at the bottom: –Demolish old floor –Install new false floor –Acts as base for whole cooling channel –Conventional construction, but has to be reasonably flat & true –Able to withstand 50 tonne quench force –And, most important, able to be fiddled with extensively in future! 4

5 Progress since 2007 Next level: –Provision of baseplates for spectrometers 1 & 2 –Accurate and repeatable locations for detectors –Able to withdraw from beamline for servicing –Magnets move on airpads –Non-magnetic construction –Able to react 50 tonne quench force 5

6 Progress since 2007 Provision of two magnetic shield walls –Act as return yoke for cooling channel –Protect ISIS Linac and MICE control room from stray fields –150 tonnes of magnet iron, delivered on time by UK industry –And supporting framework/galleries 6

7 Progress since 2007 Have also done much routine but essential infrastructure work: Provision of CCR cooling water system Uprated compressed air system Provide air conditioning Uprated the domestic power, lighting & fire detection Compliance of R5.2 to all safety & local rules Extract fans Accommodation for 28 CCR compressors and services General civil engineering work Much help here from Building Projects Group (BPG) and ISIS at RAL Formal handover from BPG 16 th June – many thanks indeed 7

9 Schedule and planning considerations All this brings us to June 2010: –Have been ready for Steps II &III for a few months –Were geared towards Step II start in Mid- May, 2010 –Won’t happen till later in 2011, –What to do........? 9

10 Re-defining the UK project Steps II & III are delayed for at least one year UK installation team and infrastructure construction were very carefully geared towards spectrometer solenoid #1 arriving at May 15 th We want to hold the installation team together, so: Advance work on the LH2 system - see also Matt’s talk Vent system Civil engineering Pipe/valve & gas panel work RF power work Design of waveguide/power/cooling infrastructure, placement of amplifiers ‘Hands on’ work at DL with RAL team – second LBNL amplifier Both RF & LH2 projects contain open issues – better to find out early 10

11 11 All this has to be designed & built outside R5.2. LH2 external infrastructure

12 RF Power Two RF amplifiers from LBNL are being reconditioned at DL –One is complete, the other is waiting –Plan to deploy some of existing team on second amplifier –Important to do this early while we have time –Led by Daresbury Lab –Very beneficial DL/RAL relationship –RF amplifiers quite big, 4m high and 1 tonne – we have to fit four of them in a very confined space 12

14 Electrical Engineering Also led by Daresbury Lab: –All detector wiring and cabling –Electrical services in general –Complete implementation of PPS (Personnel Protection System) –Contribution to electrical substation upgrade project –Conventional and S/C magnet power supplies –Cooling Channel controls project –Target power, readout & controls Major contribution from BPG: –Power for heating, lighting –Implementation of fire detection –A/C power –Electrical substation upgrade project 14

15 Electrical substation progress The problem: The electrical supply in R5.2, the MICE Hall, needs to be upgraded to 2MVA, certainly to run at Step IV and probably at Step III Most of the power is required for CCR compressors, latest predictions are (5+1)x2 for spectrometer solenoids and 3x2 for coupling coils The present layout in R5.2 gives 1.25MVA and is based on fifty-year old equipment that has not been used to full capacity for many years The ingoing cable to R5.2 has adequate capacity and does not require any work Historically, this has been treated as a host-lab contribution and has never appeared MICE’s costed plan But we understand the need for a discussion 15

17 17 Present configuration of Spectrometer sol 3 x 2 stage CCR + 1 single stage Proposed configuration: 4 (or 5) 2 stage CCR + 1 single stage Coupling magnet will likely need Three instead of two 2-stage CCRs What all the fuss is about: Cryomech two-stage Closed Cycle Refrigerator MICE something of a pioneer here Not usual to cool large magnets with CCRs

18 Electrical substation Four technically viable solutions have been identified by BPG and DL Varying degrees of cost/technical capability We have been asked to follow up the two cheapest options Meet again with STFC Management on 8 th July Hope to know which version then Lead time is dominated by major components (around one year), but we also need to add design & installation time So if we begin now, might just be OK for Step III in late 2011 18

19 Future Plans Between now and 2014, MICE has to successfully build and install several large and complex subsystems, for example: –Two spectrometers –Three absorber-focus coils –Two RF-coupling coil magnets –And all their services and ancillaries In a very confined space to a reasonable degree of accuracy –Also have to accommodate several different engineering ‘cultures’ and standards –Have demonstrated that a more rigorous engineering approach pays dividends – eg, the MICE target –Now want to read that across to the other subsystems –Easier said than done....... 19

20 Future plans So we’re changing the emphasis slightly, from infrastructure and surroundings to the subsystems and interfaces Top level assembly now successfully driven by one (large!) Solid Edge CAD assembly RAL engineering team is being reinforced Full time integration engineer is appointed Am now working on support for him Monthly MICE Technical Board will be forum for integration issues Integration activity will be centralised at RAL - important Discussions just beginning with subsystem owners to encourage information flow 20
