1. 1 MICE-Video Conference Status of MICE Hall Contents: General status Electrical Mechanical Preparing for Steps II & III Risks and worries Andy Nichols, STFC, 30th July 2009

2. General status Has gone very well, a few highlights: –Air conditioning is complete and commissioned and is running –Rolling platform for Step II complete –Main compressor is installed –Painting and decorating near completion –‘domestic’ electrical services brought up to lab-wide standards –Experiment electrical services moving on quite quickly, ‘resident’ DL contract technician is paying dividends –Ready to move from ‘construction site’ to clean-lab conditions – vital for implementation of Step II and tracker readout from FNAL –Would recommend a trip around R5.2..... 2

3. Electrical Since June 28 th, Southern Electric Contractors (SEC) have been updating the ‘domestic’ electrical infrastructure This is independent of the MICE experiment and is funded by STFC. It includes: Main lighting upgrade Blue lighting installation Smoke detection Fire alarms to RAL site-standards Will finish August 3 rd, currently working through ‘snag-list’ Only small odds and ends to do, but handover of fire system will be later – does not affect progress in hall at all though MICE electrical work comprises cabling and infrastructure for Step II, PPS wiring and general support and is making good progress 3

4. Mechanical Main compressor installation has been complete for some time But safety certification has been delayed......certificates promised this week! Luckily only thing held up is testing rolling platform air pads for Step II – not critical path Parts now specified and being purchased for: CCR cooling water circuitry Compressed air infrastructure in R5.2 These jobs keep Willie & co busy for rest of calendar year CCR compressor stands design work nearly complete Painting in Hall is essentially complete – small bits to do when access becomes available – agreed locally with Willie Final coat of epoxy on West floor during August shutdown – start 17 th Redundant pipes are removed from LH2 rack room 4

6. Preparing for Steps II & III Modified drawings of additional Virostek disc complete Step II rolling platform awaiting 10 tonne load test – have to wait for compressor certification – not worried Step III rolling platform is all ready for installation Diffuser infrastructure is understood now – Oxford group has visited Hall clean up has started – quite a bit still to do! Floor painting is final act – aiming for end August Latest proposal for additional CCRs being assimilated – space for compressors and capability of power supply 6

7. Risks & worries No chance of non-MICE funding for 2MVA power upgrade – ruled out for this FY STFC Operation Board funding cut by two thirds We also will not get: Railings around linac roof Main door replacement Any local roadway improvements But planning applications going ahead anyway These last are in the ‘would be nice’ category luckily, but the power upgrade is a real worry 7
