COMMON SKELETAL INJURIES  Fracture  Dislocation  Sprain

FRACTURE  Fracture  Break in the bone  Simple  Bone is cracked or completely broken into two or more pieces  Compound  Broken ends of the bone stick out through the skin

DISLOCATION  Dislocation  Occurs when the end of a bone comes out of its joint.

SPRAIN  Sprain  occurs when ligaments are stretched too far and tear in places.  Most common joint injury

IDENTIFYING INJURY  X-RAYS  Takes pictures on the BONE  MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)  Takes pictures of SOFT TISSUE (muscle, ligaments, brain tumors, etc.)

TREATING INJURIES  Cast  Joint Replacement  Arthroscopy

CAST  Cast  Hard casing to let bone heal naturally.

JOINT REPLACEMENT  Joints are injured or diseased and require treatment.  EXAMPLE:  Arthritis  Disease of the joints that makes movement painful.  Joint is replaced with an artificial one made of metals or plastics.  Doctors can replace knees, shoulders, hips, fingers. And wrists.

ARTHROSCOPY  Joint injuries can also be treated by arthroscopic surgery.  Doctors make a small incision and insert a slim, tube-shaped instrument called an arthroscope into the joint.  A camera attached to the arthroscope projects the image from inside the joint onto a monitor.  Small tools are then used to repair the damage through the small incisions.
