1 Skeletal / Muscular System
Subtitle

2 Skeletal / Muscular System
Vocabulary Abduction – motion away from the midline Joint – Point of juncture of two or more bones Adduction – motion toward the midline Ligament – tissue which connects bone to bone Flexion – decrease in the angle between 2 bones Bursa – Sac or cavity filled with synovial fluid Extension – movement that straightens bones at joint Tendon – Tissue connects muscle to bone Trophy – muscle development of nutrition Synovial fluid – present in synovial joints (elbow, knee shoulder, hip) of the body, it lubricates and nourishes the joint

3 Skeletal Functions Supports and gives shape to the body
Protects internal organs Makes movement possible Produces Blood Cells (in the marrow)

4 Fractures Dislocations Bone Disorders and Disease
Bone injuries and Disease

5 Bone Injuries and Disease Fractures
Simple fracture Compound fracture Bone is broken, skin and soft tissue torn, increased chance of infection. Bone is broken, without external wound, also known as a closed fracture.

6 Bone Injuries and Disease Fractures
Greenstick fracture Incomplete break in which the bone is partially broken and partially bent. Spiral fracture Bone twist resulting in one or more breaks

7 Bone Injuries and Disease Fractures
Comminuted fracture Bone fragments or splinters into more than two pieces. Impacted fracture

8 Bone Injuries and Disease Dislocations
Displacement of bone from its normal position in a joint, ligaments may be torn and stretched.

9 Bone Injuries and Disease Disorders and disease
Arthritis Bursitis Inflammation of the bursa (a sac or cavity filled with synovial fluid). Inflammation of bones and joints.

10 Bone Injuries and Disease Disorders and disease
Kyphosis Osteomyelitis Inflammation or infection (inside the bone) Increase in the curvature of the spine resulting in hunchbacked appearance.

11 Bone Injuries and Disease Disorders and disease
Scoliosis Sprain Injury to ligaments resulting from wrenching (sudden twist) of joint. Side to side curvature of the spine “S” like in shape

12 Muscles Skeletal or involuntary Smooth or Involuntary Cardiac

13 Muscles Skeletal or Voluntary
. Muscles that move by a persons will
