1 Chapter 16 Body Systems 16-1 Skeletal System

2 Skeletal System Made up of: Bones Joints Connective Tissue

3 BONES Bones 206 bones in your body
They are storage systems for minerals (Calcium,Phosphorus) They produce the bodies blood cells Marrow: A soft tissue in the center of some bones Makes millions of RBC every day.

4 Cranium Mandible

5 Left Hand

7 Right Foot

9 JOINTS Joint: The point at which two bones meet. Some do not move
The bones of the skull Some move slightly Those between the vertebrae of the back Some move a lot: they are called mobile joints.

10 JOINTS Mobile Joints Hinge Joint: They allow movement in one direction. Knees and elbows Gliding Joint: They help bones slide over each other without twisting. Wrists, ankles Pivot Joints: They allow movement with limited rotation. Found between the neck and head Ball and Socket Joint: They allow complete rotation to move in all directions. Hips and Shoulders

11 CONNECTIVE TISSUE Cartilage: a strong flexible, gel like tissue that cushions your joints. It reduces the friction during movement and is important in your shoulders, elbows, and knees. Tendons: tough bands of tissue that attach muscles to bones. Ligaments: cord-like tissue that attach your bone to bone or cartilage.

14 Problems that may occur with your skeletal system
Fracture: a break in a bone caused by an injury. Dislocation: occurs when a bone is pushed out of it’s joint. Sprain: a stretching or twisting of ligaments in a joint. Overuse injuries: an injury that happens over time. Shin Splints Scoliosis: a disorder in which the spine curves to one side. Osteoporosis: a condition characterized by brittle and porous bones. It develops from long term deficiencies of calcium, certain hormones, insufficient Vitamin D, and lack of exercise. Strain: an injury to a muscle or tendon. (Not skeletal injury)
