Welcome to the Wonderful World of Chemistry

Overview of Chemistry: At the conclusion of our time together, you should be able to: 1. List a couple of the quirks my Chemistry teacher has and maybe why he’s like that!! 2. Explain the grading system for Chemistry 3. List the various reward systems for Chemistry 4. Explain the discipline procedures for Chemistry

A Little About Me n Married and father of 5 kids n Grandfather of 8 kids n 3 kids are former students (and survived even though I had such poor examples for teachers!!) n 30 th year teaching n Ordained minister

Yes, I’m Old…and

And Yes…I have some fears

What is Chemistry:

Let’s Consider: n Grading n Journal n Testing n Absences n Labs n Raffle Tickets n Mole Bucks

Grading: n 80% comes from common assessments. n 20% comes from home-learning, participation, lab work, projects and small quizzes. n 90% is needed for an “A”, etc.

Journal: n 3 Sections –Syllabus, notes, home-learning papers –labs/projects –tests/quizzes n Paper n Graph Paper

Testing: n Many Entrance/Exit/Pop/Clicker Quizzes n Tests from Quiz Questions

Labs: n Prep. –problem –background info. –hypothesis –test the hypothesis n Observations n Conclusions

Absences: n Small assignments and quizzes are dropped n Tests and larger quizzes must be made up within allotted time. n Labs must be made up within allotted time by writing 100 words for every point of lab work missed on a related topic to the lab.

Participation (50 points): n Maintained by answering questions when called upon because home- learning is completed n Maintained by doing what is on the side board n Maintained by doing what Mr. T asks you to do, like put something on the board. n Maintained by keeping your lab area organized and clean

Raffle Tickets: n Helping n Helping Mr. T in any way n Can n Can be used to improve your participation grade (one per point 1 st quarter, two per point 2 nd 2 nd quarter, etc. Drawing Each Friday

Mole Bucks: n Winning the raffle drawing n Bringing something into class n Extra help around the lab for 15 minutes n Used to improve lab grades, quarter grades and semester exams, also adds 5 points to participation grade

Discipline: n 1 st n 1 st – lose of raffle tickets and/or participation points n 2 nd n 2 nd – above and science slave n 3 rd n 3 rd – above and contact parents n 4 th n 4 th – above and contact principle

Overview of Chemistry: Let’s see if you can: 1. List a couple of the quirks my Chemistry teacher has and maybe why he’s like that!! 2. Explain the grading system for Chemistry 3. List the various reward systems for Chemistry 4. Explain the discipline procedures for Chemistry

A.P. TEST IN CHEMISTRY n You will be given some old aluminum cans and used 2 liter bottles. Recycle both. Use the recycles materials to develop a new synthetic plastic that could be used to coat the space shuttle as it reenters the earth's atmosphere or could be used to coat teeth against tooth decay.

There is Life After Chemistry! n Do your home-learning, keep your journal up to date and you can survive Chemistry!! n Good Luck and have a Great Year!!!
