Welcome to IT 241 Introductions Syllabus Review Classroom Review Week 1 Assignment Questions

Who Am I? First, if you haven't read the Introduction page, my name is Dr. Veronica Sims. I live in New Jersey EST time zone Where are you located? What time zone are you in? Many call me Prof, Sims, which ever you are most comfortable with. I'm not difficult as long as respect is involved.

Where Are We? The reason that I asked this is because I want to make sure that everyone is aware that Kaplan University schedules are based on the Eastern time zone. If you are not sure about what time it is in your time zone compared to Eastern, you can check the time at

Have You Yet? Ok, I'm going to ask a question and would like you to respond only once to this question and answer honestly. Your answer is not counted in the grade. (smile)

Have you read the syllabus yet? The first thing you should do in every class you take is read the syllabus. While we are only on day one of our first week, I hope that everyone has or will read all announcements and the syllabus before getting started on the weekly unit activities. I will post announcements frequently, so please be sure to check for new announcements each time you enter our classroom.

Syllabus Location You will find the syllabus as a sub link under Course Home. Click on this link to display the class syllabus and it will appear on the right side of your screen.

Do you know what your section number for this course is?

Course Number & Section For those who don't, this can be found as the suffix of your course number IT This is important to know because several of the projects in this course will require you to insert this data. Another importance reason is because you will need to include your course number and section in the subject line of s, or introduction of contact through AIM when communicating with me through these methods.

How To Reach Me… Be sure to have these written down in case you cannot access the Internet or your computer. There are several ways to reach me. Communication : Personal Other Important Numbers You Should Know. Tech Support Your Advisor

When To Reach Me… I answer my daily and sometimes more often. My communicator office hours are one day a week and two hour long on Wednesday from 7:00 pm-9:00pm, but I am usually online more often.

Other Communications Other communications include seminars, which is where we are now, and the discussion boards. We will attend a weekly seminar here in KHE every Thursday evening for one hour at 10:00 PM. But will move to Adobe Connect after everyone is in attendance in the seminar room. Every week we will have a discussion question where every one should post a response and then post comments to two of our classmates’ responses. Be sure to provide substantive responses

Grading Criteria Grade Distribution

Graded Activities Each week from unit 1 through 9, you will participate in discussion and seminar and complete a weekly project.

Grading After grades are posted to the grade book, which will occur by Monday following each end of a unit, you can check to see what your current grade status is, based on 1000 total points, and how it falls in the grade scale as listed on the syllabus under Kaplan University Grading Scale.

Any Questions About Grading?

Late Submissions Projects: Up to one week (1-7 calendar days) late 20% deduction in points After one week (8-14 calendar days) late 30% deduction in points Projects submitted more than 14 days late will not be accepted without prior arrangements between you and me via . Discussion Board Responses: Late policy does NOT apply to the Discussion Board or Seminar. All outstanding course work, including the final project, is due no later than 9AM EST on the Sunday prior to the end of term. There will be no exceptions unless discussed with me, in advance, via .

Resubmission Policy You may resubmit up to THREE (3) assignments/projects for Unit 1 through Unit 9 with the following conditions. The assignment was originally submitted by the due date The original submission contained a substantial (75% or more) of the work required Revisions are submitted no later than 5 days after receiving the original grade, and You notify me by of the resubmission Only one resubmission per assignment/project The resubmitted project will be graded within 5 days from the date of resubmission and the higher of the two grades will be given. The resubmission policy does NOT apply to the discussion board, seminar, or unit quizzes.

What To Expect of Grades… Your work will be checked for authenticity. Participation and attendance will be accounted for. Please be sure that you cite your resources and follow Kaplan Universities guidelines as posted under Academic Success in Course Home.

Unscheduled or Unplanned Absence For unexpected extenuating circumstances, contact me via . Incompletes There are times when students need to request an incomplete in order to have an extension to finish missed course work. This opportunity is available but comes with limitations. First, incompletes must be requested by submitting the incomplete form on or before __________________.

Requesting An I Grade or Incomplete “Qualifying” To qualify for a granted incomplete grade and extension, you must meet 2 criterion. 1) 75% of the course work must be completed and submitted. 2) Extenuating circumstances must be present. (Just as in late submissions...Vacation, not enough time, forgot, etc are not considered extenuating circumstance)

Any Questions… About These Policies?

Seminar Participation Just logging in or showing up is not enough to gain credit for our seminars. In future seminars I will be posting specific questions and will expect everyone to attempt an answer. I am not going to be strict with the spelling correctness in the seminars, however I expect that we all do our best. Errors will occur when we are communication in this live venue. Seminar participation and proper etiquette are expected. Side bar conversation should be reserved for outside our seminar hour. You may use the Student Cafe or other communication tools for non-course discussion.

Seminar Participation During our seminars, we will need to follow some basic ground rules. Please raise your hand when you have a question with // 1. If I type 3 dots at the end of a statement, please wait before responding as I have further data to post. 2. Please do not start side-bar conversations. The discussion will be restricted to the current unit's topic. 3. Don't worry about typos. They happen. Be as clear as you can. 4. Please do not chime in with "I agree" or "Nice comment" or with "What s/he said". These will be deleted from the archive during grading as they will not count towards quality contribution. 5. Enjoy our learning experience together!!!!!

Seminar Participation If you cannot or choose not to attend seminar, you will be expected to complete the current unit's quiz. There will be no discussion covering the quiz and no assistance. So before you chose to do the quiz over the seminar, be sure you are comfortable with the current unit's material and workload. If you choose to do both, you will receive the higher score of the two. The grade for seminar and quiz will not be combined. If you attend seminar, your grade for seminar will appear in your grade book under the FLA assignment. The quiz will only be available during the unit in which it covers, so be sure to complete it before Tuesday 11:59:59pm of that unit week.

Discussion Board Participation Discussion is the greatest learning tool and one of my favorite places to share, besides seminar, is the discussion board. Be aware of the expectations and the grading rubric for the discussion board, be sure to read the syllabus regarding participation. Be sure to post a substantive response to the discussion question and posting you make to your classmates.

Discussion Board Participation DB Weekly Rubric (how to get top scores) Responses are on topic, original, and contribute to the quality of the discussion. Responses make frequent, informed references to unit material. Responses are clearly written. Substantial original answers to the questions that further the work of the class. (typically 100+ words) Two or more thoughtful responses, per discussion question, to classmates that add value and advance the discussion

Any Questions… About Rubrics & Activities?

Where is Everything??? There are a few areas that you need to be aware of... Click on each unit title to find Reading = Reading Projects = Assignments Discussion = Discussion board Seminar/FLA = Seminar topic Seminar/Quiz = Quiz Access Project = Where to submit Project

Assignment for this Week 1. Define WYSIWYG software. 2. Identify a WYSIWYG program. 3. Describe 3 key features and how they are used. 4. Describe one testing features included in program. 5. Write a 1-2 page paper, APA formatting, plus cover and reference page. 6. Submit paper to dropbox. Complete the project. Attend the weekly Seminar. If you can't attend the Seminar, please take the quiz in replacement. If you do both, your instructor will take the higher of the points.

Any Questions… About Where to Find Anything?

What’s Due When??? Our weeks start on Wednesday of each week and all weekly projects are due by the following Tuesday, no later than 11:59pm EST. You will complete the assignment for this week, post it to the dropbox by 11:59pm. Be sure to review the late policy again.

Wrapping Up Now, as mentioned before, if you have any questions please send me an or contact me through Microsoft communicator during office hours. In either case, please be sure to identify your course number and section to ensure a smooth communication and quick turn- around. I will open the floor for questions from you. Please raise your hand // so I don't miss anyone

Closure Ok, that’s all folks! Remember to post early in the discussion boards. This week we are getting to know each other and check our navigation skills. Be sure to click respond to both discussion board questions in our Unit 1 Discussion board. Have a Great Night Everyone!

Any Questions before we leave? If not, have a great week.
