6 CM220 College Composition II Friday, January 29, 2016 6 Unit 1: Introduction to Effective Academic and Professional Writing course navigation course home When you click on Course Home, “Announcements” appear at the top of the page. Please carefully read all announcements from your instructor—they will contain information designed to help you succeed in this course. Toward the bottom of the page, you will see a “What’s New” section that will alert you to new Discussion Board (DB posts). You will also have access to the “Course Checklist.” This is a great tool to use in regards to keeping track of the assignments and so forth you have completed and need to complete.

7 CM220 College Composition II Friday, January 29, 2016 7 Unit 1: Introduction to Effective Academic and Professional Writing course activities Discussion boards:  Discussions (DBs) should be interactive.  Post early and post often to fully contribute.  You are expected to respond to your classmates as well as the instructor—interact with the class.  Discussions constitute 30% of your overall grade. Seminars:  Units 1-9 include live seminars and they are an integral part of the course—participation is expected and appreciated.  Please stay on topic and contribute.  If you must miss a seminar, you may complete the alternative ‘option 2’ seminar discussion to make up missed points.  A transcript (history) of each seminar is available for your review. If you miss seminar, please read the transcript!

8 CM220 College Composition II Friday, January 29, 2016 8 Unit 1: Introduction to Effective Academic and Professional Writing course activities Unit 3 project - topic exploration and defining purpose: This project consists of choosing a topic, describing two controversies surrounding this topic, describing which side of the argument you feel is right and why, and finally, formulating a thesis statement. Unit 4 project – the formal final research paper statement: This project consists of presenting your thesis statement, describing three main points supporting your thesis statement and describing how your argument is challenged by the opposition. You will also include an APA reference for two different sources you have found to support your argument.

9 CM220 College Composition II Friday, January 29, 2016 9 Unit 1: Introduction to Effective Academic and Professional Writing course activities Unit 6 project – the first draft: This project will incorporate the feedback you received on your Unit 3 and 4 projects and will consist of a 5-7 page draft of your paper. This must be your original work written for this class—plagiarism will not be tolerated. You must include 3 sources as well as a title page and references page (APA formatted). Unit 7 project – peer reviews: Per your instructor’s instructions, you will read and thoughtfully respond to at least one other student’s first draft and provide constructive feedback that will help that student improve his or her writing.

10 CM220 College Composition II Friday, January 29, 2016 10 Unit 1: Introduction to Effective Academic and Professional Writing course activities Unit 9 project – the final persuasive research paper: Your final project for this course will incorporate the feedback you received on your first draft and will consist of an 5 page formal persuasive research paper. This must be your original work written for this class—plagiarism will not be tolerated. You must include 5 sources as well as a title page and references page (APA formatted).

12 CM220 College Composition II Friday, January 29, 2016 12 Unit 1: Introduction to Effective Academic and Professional Writing course expectations  Read and understand the course syllabus.  All work completed for this course must be your original work.  Plagiarism will not be tolerated.  Readings should be completed early in each Unit.  Be prepared to participate in seminars.  Discussion boards require thoughtful participation and interaction.  Discussion board posts should be completed early in the Unit so participants have ample time to respond to one another and move our discussions forward.  Plan ahead for projects … time management is key!  Communicate! If you fall behind, please contact your instructor. If you have questions, contact your instructor!
