2 Welcome to AB140 Greetings and welcome to the Unit 1Seminar! I am your instructor Dr. Lazar. The purpose of this seminar is to share some things with you that will help you to recognize what to expect in the course. Seminars are one hour in duration. If you are attending a live session, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and to discuss any issues that you need clarification about at the end of each section of the presentation

10 A Typical Week in the Course Each course is broken down into 10 parts, called Units. Each course is 10 weeks in duration; there is a Unit for each week. Units run from Wednesday through midnight on the following Tuesday. Your task is to complete the assignments within each Unit during the Wednesday—Tuesday midnight timeframe. Don’t confuse your seminar time (also called class time) with the Wednesday through Tuesday Unit schedule.

11 A Typical Week in a Kaplan Course There are Buttons (links) running on the left of the screen for each Unit. Clicking the button for each unit will open a list of assignments for that Unit week. Clicking the icons that appear on the larger portion of the screen will show all information for completing each assignment (both graded and non-graded assignments) within each unit.

14 Readings -The readings for this course are located in the DocSharing link of the course. You will need to complete the readings to do well on the assignments. -Start each new Unit on Wednesdays with the Readings

15 Readings This course uses electronic version of the text book: Management M Start Here by Bateman & Snell, 2 nd edition, 2011 Textbook readings in Doc Sharing Additional web reading links in each unit

16 .Discussion Questions --These are graded assignments -- Minimum of 3 posts expected each unit week, meeting the following requirements: ***Your response to the question and comments to at least 2 others on the discussion board. ***Response to discussion question should be at least 100 words in length. ***First post should be made by Saturday ***Posts should be spread across at least 3 separate days in the unit week. ***Complete details are on your syllabus

18 Discussion Board Participation Minimum of 3 posts -Response to Discussion Question -Comments to at least 2 classmates -Comments to instructor not included -Meaningful discussion Minimum of 3 days -Initial post by Saturday each week -Earlier the better discussion for all!

19 Discussion Board Quality - Questions answered completely - Response on topic and original - Demonstrates analysis of the unit material - Response to question no less than 100 words - Posts organized and logical - Correct spelling and grammar - References used and cited properly - Respect and consideration

21 Assignments Unit 1: Using the Drop Box Unit 2: Management Theories Units 3-10: Sandwich Blitz, Inc. Business Case Study scenarios At least one full double-spaced page in length, using size 12-point Times New Roman font.

22 Assignment Quality Be sure to respond to each question Answer all the questions in terms of the key concepts of that unit Apply the concepts and language of the course Additional research may be used Proof, proof, proof – grammar and spelling matter.

23 Dropbox Assignment Dropbox Assignments -These are graded assignments -Submitted to Instructor directly via the Dropbox (instructions for using Dropbox will be with assignment) -Click grades in Gradebook for instructor comments

24 Assignment Submission Be sure your assignment is submitted to the correct Dropbox as an attachment in Microsoft Word format Be sure your file is named using the correct Kaplan file naming convention as follows: username_homework_unit.doc

26 Reviews Can be retaken until you get the score you want; you can see your score at the time you submit the review. Score will show in your gradebook one week after the close of the unit. Your scores are visible in Instructor’s Gradebook Avoid the deadline. Take your reviews early!

28 Quizzes This course includes several Quizzes. Some are instead of a Unit Review; some are in addition to the Unit Review. Quizzes are unique in two ways: -They can only be entered once -They are timed

30 Seminars There is a seminar day and time for each course. Our seminars will be held the same time and day each week. If there is any change in our regular schedule, you will be notified in advance. If this course has non-graded seminars, attendance in seminar does not result in a direct grade, although everyone is expected to attend. If this course has mandatory, graded seminars, contact the instructor for information for making up missed seminars.

31 Seminars Cont. To prepare for the seminar, view the questions in the seminar link; prepare responses. You don’t have to turn in your responses to these questions, but you are expected to have prepared some responses to the seminar questions and offer them during the discussion. You and your classmates will discuss the questions and responses together with me during the seminar hour.

35 Extenuating Circumstances If you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from completing projects, quizzes, seminars or participating in the class, please contact your instructor to make alternative arrangements. The possibility of alternative arrangements is at the discretion of your instructor. Active communication is the key to overcoming any hurdles you may encounter during the term. It is your responsibility to inform your instructor (ahead of time, whenever possible) of extenuating circumstances that might prevent you from completing work by the assigned deadline. In those situations, we will work together to come up with a mutually acceptable alternative. Prior notification does not automatically result in a waiver of the late penalties. Please note that evaluation of extenuating circumstances is at the discretion of your instructor and documentation may be required for verification of the extenuating circumstance. Examples of extenuating circumstances may include but are not limited to: personal/family member hospitalization, death in the family, weather/environmental evacuation due to fire/hurricane, or active military assignment where internet connectivity is unavailable for a limited time period. Computer-related issues and internet connectivity issues are not considered extenuating circumstances. Without Extenuating Circumstances: · Up to one week (1-7 calendar days) late 20% deduction in points · After one week (8-14 calendar days) late 30% deduction in points · No work will be accepted more than two (2) weeks after the due date. Note: In order for you to make up a quiz, exam or discussion thread, you must contact your instructor by email at least one day prior to the day you want to make up the work so that access can be provided. Additionally, you must notify your instructor by email when you have submitted late work.

40 Unit 1 Assignment Objective: Use the Drop Box -Read Course Syllabus -Post Syllabus Acknowledgement You must read and review the course syllabus located in the home area as well as Doc Sharing. Once you have read and reviewed the course syllabus: Download the Unit 1 Syllabus Acknowledgement Type your name and the date into this document, and then Choose “save as”, and rename the document as (username is your Kaplan username): username_homework_unit1.doc IMPORTANT: Remember where you have saved the document so that you can locate your work later! Submit the assignment using the Unit 1: Assignment Dropbox. For instructions on how to submit your projects to the Dropbox, click on the Additional Help icon below.
