Welcome, Parents of the class of 2019!

 14th year teaching, all at PR  Attended Lewis University for undergraduate and graduate school  English teacher, Reading Specialist  Administration Masters (2014)

 Reading  Grammar  Argumentation

 Basic Reading Inventory  Fiction: short stories, literature circles, whole class novel Tuesdays and Thursdays  Non-fiction/Informational Text Fridays  Independent Reading: Incentives, no assignments Tuesdays and Thursdays (20 minutes)

 New concept: Monday  Practice: first 5 minutes, Tues., Wed.. Thurs.  Summative assessment: Friday Retake eligibility: student must complete an extra practice in the Literacy Center with an English teacher the following week and retake that Friday

 Creating quality arguments in writing and speech, grounded in the Toulmin method Mondays and Wednesdays  More frequent, shorter written assignments until argumentation skills are solid

 Formative: practice assignments and assessments; 10% of grade  Summative: final assessment of skills; 90% of grade Retake opportunities are given on some summative assessments when additional practice is completed by the student.

Late Work: Per department policy, all daily work for classes not turned at the beginning of the period is considered late. Late assignments may be turned in for feedback but will not receive academic credit. Absent Work: Students have two days for each day they were absent to make up their work. It is their responsibility to find out what they have missed. Late Major (summative)Assignments: Per department policy, late essays will be deducted one letter grade for every day late.

 Ask your child specific questions about what he/she is reading.  Help proofread writing; the more eyes on it, the better. Have students check written assignments against the rubric.  Encourage extra reading at home.  Encourage your student to go review their class notes and annotations.  Encourage students to use the Literacy Center.

 By phone: ext. 125  Remind 101: In the phone number box, enter this number: Text this
