2 about me... Wife and DOG Mother  Background I graduated from Auburn University in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in Professional Writing & Literacy Studies, and I completed a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Middle Tennessee State University in May of I am looking forward to utilizing all I’ve learned to help your child become a better writer!

3 What do we do in literacy lab?
In one word....WRITE! We want students to learn how to respond to constructed response questions/prompts, which require the use of textual evidence to support answers. The types of writing we cover include: Informative/Explanatory Argumentative Narrative. This means we also READ many texts that are often related to what students are learning in other subjects. Then, we WRITE about a question/prompt that is related to what they have read.

4 Here's One Example... In ELA class the first nine weeks, students will read the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio. One of the recurring themes in this novel is bullying. In Literacy Lab, we will read several non- fiction texts about bullying. Once we've read the text, students will be asked to respond to a question or writing prompt related to the text. We will teach students how to organize their writing, write their response using sufficient evidence from the text to develop their topic, use grade-appropriate vocabulary, and employ standard conventions of English.

5 essential learning for literacy lab
Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content. Conduct short research projects to answer a question, using several sources. With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

6 Grading: Assessments – 50% Classwork – 40% Homework – 10% Students have 5 days to turn in missing work. 5 points will be deducted each day the assignment is late. After 5 days, the grade is a zero. In order to retake a test, the student must complete an educational assignment that proves the student has practiced the tested skill. The assignment will be at the teacher’s discretion. -No extra credit will be given.- (Given Each 9 weeks:) -2 Formal Writing tests = assessment grades -1 project = assessment grade -1 Word Wall test = classwork grade - many quizzes/in-class assignments = classwork grades -1-3 take home assignments = homework grades
