1 Welcome To Ms. Lipovsky’s Language Arts Class

2 About Ms. Lipovsky Graduated from Misericordia University in Dallas, Pennsylvania Majored in Elementary Education Master’s degree in Classroom Technology from Wilkes University in Wilkes-barre, Pennsylvania Played Soccer in college From Loudoun County originally, and went to Loudoun County Public Schools Has coached at various levels in and around Loudoun County

3 Curriculum Five strands of instruction – Writing – Research – Literature – Communication – Vocabulary skills

4 Materials Needed Bring the following supplies each day: – Loose leaf paper – Composition book – Binder with 5 dividers – Pencil Pouch with – Pencils – Pens – Colored pencils – Scissors – Glue sticks – KLEENEX (optional)

5 Student’s assignments will be graded as: Reading Writing Oral Communication

6 Language Arts 6 Formative Grading Scale 4- A+ - Expert (exceeds the standard) 3- B+ - Proficient (meets the standard) 2- C+ - Basic (progressing on standard) 1 - D+ - Novice/In Training (inconsistent knowledge of expectations) 0 - No Evidence of Learning

7 Language Arts 6 Summative Grading Scale A+ 98-100 A 93-97 A- 90-92 B+ 87-89 B 83-86 B- 80-82 C+ 77-79 C 73-76 C- 70-72 D+ 67-69 D 63-66 D- 60-62 F 59 and below

8 Reading Log Students are required to maintain a reading log I do not check it every day I will check it occasionally to see if they are keeping up on it Parents are not required to initial

9 Homework Homework reinforces skills taught in school, prepares students for upcoming lessons or tests, teaches responsibility and organization, and develops positive study habits. Homework may be assigned Monday through Thursday. No homework on Fridays (usually). Homework is reviewed the following class period Students are asked to read 30 minutes each night. I do not always put that on the agenda, but it is a standing assignment.

10 Absent? Students must check the Absent folder in the classroom for missing assignments. They should schedule a time to meet with me to get caught up on the work they missed.

11 Resource Allows students -to make up missing assignments -receive extra help from teachers -get ahead on homework

12 OTTW One to the World District initiative to encourage students to think beyond our classroom, to discover, explore and learn from the world. BYOT or Bring Your Own Technology is a key component

13 First OTTW lessons A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park Based on a true story of life in the Southern Sudan and the importance of determination, courage, kindness and water.

14 Phoenix Parents and students are allowed access to information concerning assignments and grades. The email address used by staff is linked to the Phoenix address. Please check for accuracy.

17 Retakes Students may retake an assessment if they scored a 69% or below on their first attempt They must be up to date on ALL other assignments (homework, classwork, projects) Schedule a time to be re-taught the material misunderstood This may occur BEFORE school, AFTER school, or at RESOURCE

18 Library Students have the opportunity to go to the library during Language Arts This occurs approximately every 2 weeks There are many other opportunities to visit the library – During lunch – Before and after school – Resource

19 Ways to support the class Extra books at home? Consider donating for the class. We will find a home for books. Need fresh books? Order on line from Scholastic.com or use student fliers. Our class code is LJKKX All proceeds are used for the classroom Library.
