Hello. My name is Holly Steed – 2 nd Grade Creekside Forest Elementary School Parent Orientation September 2015

Daily Schedule 8:40-10:15 Language Arts/Reading 10:15-11:00 Specials ( Wed., Thurs., Fri. P.E.) 11:00-12:05 Word work/ spelling/writing 12:05-12:35 Lunch 12:35-2:10 Math 2:10-2:30 Recess 2:30-3:00 Science 3:00-3:30 Social Studies

Specials We have a two week rotation. Specials include PE, music, and art. PE is Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday – please make sure your child wears tennis shoes.

Library Tuesdays—Weekly checkout Students will be encouraged to check out Accelerated Reader books for nightly reading.

Spelling Monday- Pretest-patterns/words are introduced Review throughout the week Friday spelling tests Tests will consist of weekly words, plus 3 dictation sentences. Students who score 100 on pre-test will receive challenge words to practice throughout the week and for homework. Spelling grades are averaged into one Major Grade per nine weeks.

Math Place value to 1,200 Addition and Subtraction --Flashcards Shapes and Patterns Measurement Money and Time Problem Solving Compacting and Acceleration for extension menus

Fact Proficiency District-wide assessment will count as a daily grade each nine weeks (Addition is 1 st nine weeks) Weekly fact tests averaged for 1 grade, weighted as ½ a Major grade Students are given 5 seconds per problem. Expectations: Positive Discipline Red ticket rewards Classroom economy Conduct Marks for discipline issues reported in student planners. Please check and initial daily. Classroom Agreement created and signed together

Grades A= B= C= D= F= 69 and below Circled grades have been recorded in gradebook. E, S, N, and U for conduct and homework. Late assignments: 1 day late -5 points, 2 days late -10 points, 3 rd day a zero will be awarded

Homework Students will receive weekly homework for math and language arts. Homework is due Friday. Please review with your student. Ensure students are studying for spelling tests, practicing math facts, & reading nightly for 20 minutes.

– GT cluster – ALL students pre-test and may test out of many objectives, leaving them time for extension and menu activities. – All students work at their reading level, self-selecting “just right” books for daily assignments. Leveled readers, selected by me are used for small group and independent projects. – GT students only complete Envision project with assistance of Ms. Lummus – DIFFERENTIATION happens consistently in our – classroom-

Attendance Call or if student is absent If your child is absent, you must send or fax in a signed note within 2 days for it to be excused. Doctor’s notes are also appreciated. If your child is absent more than 5 days, a doctor’s note is required. Early dismissals and tardies will count against perfect attendance. Excessive tardiness results in study hall in office during lunch. Please schedule vacations during school breaks.

General Information Shorts under skirts - no belly buttons and spaghetti straps - no sleeveless shirts (jerseys) Birthday snacks—Ice Cream passes or other small treat Healthy snacks and water bottles; No candy, chips, cookies, or messy snacks. Transportation changes must be made in writing or fax with your id, signed by parent, and submitted by 3:00 p.m. Follow-up faxes with a phone call. Sign and return progress report & report cards No equipment/toys brought from home
