Physical Needs  Include: food, water, shelter and clothing.  Items are necessary for good health, comfort and to sustain life.  People fulfill their physical needs in different ways.  Regardless of how these needs are met, they must be at least partially satisfied before going on to the other needs.

Safety and Security Needs  People need to feel free from danger, risk, or injury in their surroundings.  Need to feel safe in own home.  Knowing what to expect in the future helps people fulfill their needs for security.  Daily routines add to your sense of security.

Love and Acceptance Needs  Need to feel loved by other people  Needs to know the warmth of human affection  Don’t expect for every person to love you.  Need to be accepted, supported, praised and loved by others.  Basis for loving relationships begins during childhood.

Esteem Needs  Have pride in what you do.  Everyone can do something well.  Focus on your strengths.  If you have a positive self-esteem, you will be able to foster that of others around you.

Self-Actualization  Highest level of Maslow’s ranking.  To reach this level, all other needs must be at least partially satisfied.  Reach full potential.  Seek self-fulfillment by expressing their true selves.

Needs vs. Wants  Everyone has the same basic needs.  Wants are those things people desire, but don’t need.  Wants are not necessary for survival, but they may bring satisfaction.  Good management techniques will enable you to balance needs and wants.

Personal Priorities  Beliefs, feelings, and experiences you consider to be important and desirable.  The combination of personal priorities you have and the importance you give each one makes you unique.  Your priorities become part of your personality.

Personal Priorities (cont)  Personal priorities affect your behavior.  Consciously or unconsciously, they guide the decisions you make every day.  They have developed over time.  All the experiences you have had throughout your life have contributed to your set of personal priorities.
