What is geography?

Geography is a lot of things:

Cartographer: a person who makes maps What are three things they might use? 1. computer 2. GPS (global positioning satellite) 3. protractor

Globes: are accurate spherical representations of the Earth.

What is an advantage of using a globe? A disadvantage?

ADVANTAGE DISADVANTAGE -shapes, sizes, and distances are shown accurately -hard to carry around -can only see one side of the Earth at a time -less detailed

Maps: are flat representations of the Earth. They always present a distorted image.

Distortion: a misrepresentation of an image that changes its size or shape.

Mercator Projection: shows true shape but distorts size Look at Greenland in comparison to the US.

Robinson Projection: shows fairly accurate size and shape of land with only a little distortion.

Latitude: measure of distance North or South of the equator. - these lines run East to West - The equator is o° latitude.

Longitude: measure of distance East or West of Prime Meridian. - these lines run North to South - The Prime Meridian is o° longitude.

Locations are written in the following format: °N or S/°E or W or Latitude/Longitude (Hint: It is alphabetical)
