4 Globes : Show correct shape and size, just not scale Problem with flat maps are the distortions

5 What is a Distortion? A change in the accuracy of the shape, distance or size in a map.

7 Mercator Projection Shape of landmasses and ocean areas similar to a globe Areas near the poles look bigger than they really are. Useful to navigators Longitude and latitude lines appear straight Conformal map - correct shape but not true distances or sizes

8 Interrupted Projection Shows correct shapes Not true distances or sizes Gaps in the picture of the world Shows size and shape of land Hard to figure distance
