What is government?

Government is the organization set up to make laws, settle disagreements, and to provide protection for its citizens

Branches of Government

Legislative Branch: Part of the government responsible for making laws

Executive Branch: Carries out and enforces the laws made by the legislative branch.

Judicial Branch: Interprets the laws made by the legislative branch

Who’s in charge? Who has the power?

Autocratic: One person has all the power Example: North Korea

Oligarchic: Few or a small group has all the power. Example: China

Democratic: All citizens have the power. Examples: India and South Korea

How is the power shared?

Unitary: The central government has all the power Example: China or Saudi Arabia

Federal: Power is shared between the central and local governments Example: India and the United States

Confederacy: Power is shared equally amongst all voluntary members Example: the European Union and OPEC

Types of Government

Monarchy: Rule by a king or queen or other hereditary ruler Examples: Saudi Arabia and England

Republic: A country with an elected leader. Citizens have the power. Example: India and Israel

Democracy: Rule by the people Examples: Israel and Turkey

Dictatorship: Rule by one person Example: North Korea
