AUTOCRACY: Rule by one OLIGARCHY: Rule by few DEMOCRACY: Rule by many

5 Direct Democracy Found in Ancient Greece (Athens)
Every citizen (male) is involved in all government decisions White and black stones used to vote

6 Modern Democracy Can be split into two categories:
Presidential Democracy Parliamentary Democracy

7 Parliamentary Democracy
Found in Great Britain and Japan Led by a Prime Minister who is elected by parliament Parliament creates laws (in U.K, House of Lords and Commons People elect members of parliament, parliament chooses the executive branch

9 Constitutional Monarchy
In a CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY, there is a monarch who holds a ceremonial role in government but has little real power. Monarch is head of state but largely a symbol of the country

Found in Ancient Rome and the United States People vote for their representatives in elections Representatives make and carry out laws What are the benefits of this system?

14 Absolute Monarchy Ruled by a king or queen
Ruler selected by “divine right” Power remains within the family Found in Medieval Europe, modern Saudi Arabia

15 Communism In theory, all wealth and property is owned by everyone, “Workers of the world unite!” “Rule by all” turns into “rule by one” Ruled by one party (Communist Party) Government controls all property Media controlled by government Purpose is to have government ruled by the people, one person takes complete control “People’s Republic of …..” Ex: North Korea, Cuba, USSR, China ???

16 Dictatorship One person takes complete control of the government, usually by force Control is maintained by force and fear Strong sense of nationalism Strong central government Lack of personal freedom Ex: Nazi Germany, Iraq under Hussein 1:26.20 Swing kids

17 Dictatorship can also be Totalitarianism
A dictatorship where the government/ruler controls all aspects of public and private life North Korea is a prime example. - Camp 14

18 Theocracy Government is controlled by a religious leader or group
God or deity is the supreme ruler Ex: Ancient Egypt, Modern Iran No separation on religion and state ISIS is a modern theocracy

19 Anarchy The absence of government Does this provide absolute freedom?
Would anarchy be good? Is Anarchy a type of government?

20 What is the U.S. government like?
Democratic Republic: We elect our governmental leaders Balance of Power: Three Branches Executive- President; enforces laws Legislative- Congress; creates laws Judicial- Courts & Supreme Court; interprets laws State and Federal Government
