What is a sentence? Independent Clause A sentence is a group of words that contains a complete thought; it starts with a capital letter and has an end mark. It is also called an independent clause because it has a subject and verb and can stand alone.

What is a sentence? Independent Clause Example: I jumped to dunk the basketball. Fragment: the basketball. A simple sentence = one thought or one independent clause.

Name (first and last) Reading Period # Date A sentence is a group of words that contains a complete thought; it starts with a capital letter and has an end mark. FANBOYS Independent Clause What is a sentence? It is also called an independent clause because it has a subject and verb and can stand alone. Example: I jumped to dunk the ball. A simple sentence = one thought or one independent clause. What is a fragment? Dependent Clause (NOT a sentence)

What is a fragment? A fragment is not a sentence because it is missing something. A dependent clause cannot stand alone and may start with a dependent word like because, when, and, after, since, who. Example: A big blizzard. Dependent Clause: (NOT a sentence) Example: Because of all the snow and ice. It may have a subject and verb but is an incomplete thought.

Coordinating Conjunctions (Joining Words) Compound Sentence A compound sentence combines two or more simple sentences or independent clauses. Example: My friend invited me to a birthday party and I accepted the invitation.

Coordinating Conjunction (Joining Words) Coordinating conjunctions connect two simple sentences or independent clauses. Example: My friend invited me to a birthday party, and I accepted the invitation.

There are 7 Coordinating Conjunctions: Joining Words: For (= reason) And (= addition) Nor (= and not) But (= contrast) Or (= option) Yet (= outcome) So ( = result)

He couldn’t go home for he had no place to go. I ate a donut, and she ate cornbread. He didn’t want help, nor did he ask for it. I wanted to go late, but she wanted to go on time. She cooked dinner or he took her out eat. Grandpa had a cell phone, yet he didn’t use it. She had to go, so she called mom to drive her.
