3 rd Grade Crosswalk Coach Review Lesson 32

A sentence is a complete thought with a subject, a verb, correct capitalization and proper punctuation. There are different types of sentences. You can use different types of sentences to make your writing clearer and more interesting. A simple sentence has a subject and a verb and states a complete thought. It has one independent clause. And independent clause is a phrase with a subject and a verb that expresses a complete thought. It can stand alone.

Look at the examples below. Casey and Robin are going to the park. Rebecca’s favorite color is blue. School will be closed next week.

A compound sentence expresses more than one complete thought. It is made up of two or more simple sentences. The two sentences are usually joined by a comma and a word like and, or, but, or so. These words are coordinating conjunctions. A coordinating conjunction joins two parts of a sentence or two clauses. Casey and Robin are going to the park, and then they are going to eat dinner. Rebecca’s favorite color is blue, but her sister likes red. School is closed next week, so Mrs. Harris is taking a nap.

Read the following sentences. Change the simple sentences into a compound sentence. Change the compound sentences into simple sentences. 1. I needed to write a letter. I looked for an envelope. 2. My new sweater accidentally went in the dryer, and it shrank. 3.I helped her pick up her book. She smiled. 4.We had a flat tire. We didn’t have a spare. 5.The dog kept barking, so the neighbors complained. 6.I forgot my house keys, so I had to sit on the porch and read.
