Public Speaking: The Communication Model

Objectives: Define Communication List and explain the components of the communication process

Define communication Communication is the process of creating understanding through the exchange of messages Process is ongoing We are constantly sending and receiving messages simultaneously

The Complete Model of Communication

Defining the Parts… Sender: person who has the message to communicate Receiver: person or persons to whom the message is addressed, whether the speaker is talking to one person or to a large audience Message: the idea the sender wants the receiver to understand

Defining the parts… Context Context – physical, social, psychological, and time elements in which the communication takes place *Physical (place of speech) *Social (relationship of people involved, roles assumed, acceptable behaviors) *Psychological (attitudes and behaviors involved) *Time (actual time communication occurs; point of history; stage of relationship

Defining the Parts… Channel – method of communicating; people communicate through 5 senses (seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, smelling) Interference – anything that prevents effective communication; occurs at any point of the process

Interference Examples Receiver/sender: not preparing clear messages; receiver not paying attention Context: poor sound system; time of day affects audience attention spans; relationship between sender/receiver Channel: distortions –visual aids may be too small; technological glitches
