4 Why Study Communication?  The art of Communication is not all natural. We can learn to communicate effectively  All Communication involves the creation and exchange of meanings through signs and symbols  Communication involves understanding these signs and symbols.  People seem to have a real need to read meaning into all human action.

5 What is Communication?  The process of sending, receiving, understanding, and responding to messages in order to share meaning.  The process of creating and exchanging meaning through symbolic interaction

6 What is communication?  Is an on-going, dynamic process that actively involves the Sender and the Receiver simultaneously  May be Verbal: Oral/written word; or Non-verbal: Gestures, facial expressions, body language

7 Effective Communication  Takes a significant amount of work and energy  Stems from our understanding of ourselves and others

8 Effective Communication Involves 1. Our ability to listen 2. Our verbal communication skills 3. Our non-verbal communication skills 4. Our understanding of our relationship with others 5. Our ability to analyze an audience, or to understand communication environment

9 The Communication Elements  Sender Person with whom the message to be communicated originates. A sender Encodes or gives expression to the messagePerson with whom the message to be communicated originates. 16 FORM and CONTEXT  The specific FORM or TYPE of communication is related to the CONTEXT or ENVIRONMENT in which it is used  One element of our COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE is our ability to get our message across accurately

17 Contexts of Communication  Communication occurs within a CONTEXT, or a communication environment.

18 Contexts of Communication  You have to give a speech in each of the following situations. 19 Contexts of Communication  Factors to consider in a communication environment:  Who is present, or who is being addressed. What do you need to consider here?  The general attitude of your audience. Why is this important?  Where the communication takes place. What are the factors that should influence your communicative decisions?

20 Contexts of Communication Context may be  FORMAL Certain societal norms are evident and there are perceived patterns of behaviorCertain societal norms are evident and there are perceived patterns of behavior  INFORMAL Individuals or groups are not constrained by specified ways in which communication would normally take placeIndividuals or groups are not constrained by specified ways in which communication would normally take place

21 Types of Communication  Intrapersonal - Communication with yourself.  Interpersonal – Communication between two people.  Small group – Communication between 3 or more (12) people.

22 Types of Communication  Public – Communication between one and many, usually a captive live audience.  Mass – communicating with many, usually an unknown number of audience members.
