1 Unit 2 Communication Process

2 Components of Comm. Process Context - The people, occasion, & task. Physical Environment - Your surroundings are. Affects interaction & setting. Climate - Emotional, attitudinal, and intellectual tone.

3 Communicator - speaker creates meaning, sends and receives msg’s, & exchanges meanings. Message - meaning, feeling, & general energy from communicators. Channel - space where the message must pass. Method of sending the message.

4 Noise - interferes or disrupts communication. – Internal – inside of the communicator. – External – distraction of the physical environment. Barrier - blocks communication. Feedback - assures communication has occurred. Allows you to modify or adjust your message. Provides insight.

5 The Communicator Sender-Receiver: the person who sends the message to someone. Also processes feedback given. Receiver-Sender: person who receives the message. Obtains & provides feedback.

6 Sender-Receiver Sensory Perception – taking in data of the message though the 5 senses. Encoding – mental process of assigning meaning and language to data. Transmitting – physical process of sending verbal & nonverbal messages.

7 Components of a Message Content –the information. Feeling – when you respond, you send your feelings along with the actual text. Relationship – how well you know or don’t know each other affects the interpretation of messages.

8 Levels of Communication

9 5 levels of Communication Intrapersonal – Communication to yourself/mind. The “A” is the difference. Think of the “A” as being singular/one. Interpersonal – communication between two people. – Can be three or more if the conversation is informal. – Small talk, impromptu conversation, or planned.

10 5 Levels of Communication Small Group – with formal or informal groups or teams. 5-8 people. Normally accomplishing some task or goal. One to Group – involves a speaker talking to a large crowd who informs, persuades, or motivates an audience. It is the role of a leader & communicator.

11 5 Levels of Communication Mass Communication – the electronic or print transmission of messages to the general public. – They try to reach as big of an audience as possible. Example types – internet, magazines, newspaper, television, billboards

12 5 Principles of Communication *Clear* – Choices – you determine how you comm. – Listening – Getting the lines of communication clear with understanding – Expression – how you communicate (tone, rhythm, pitch), determines the setting (climate) – Accountable – must take ownership of comm you produce – Relationships – determines the type of comm you have within each context/

13 Characteristics of a Competent Communicator Ethical – general nature of morals, or societies codes of conduct. – Honest – Considerate – Truthful – Keeps confidence

14 Characteristics of a Competent Communicator Responsible – each communicator has their own responsibility towards communication choices & behavior. – Informed – Reliable – Logical – Accountable Accessible – competent communicators value positive relationships with peers, supervisors, & clients. Open Pleasant Caring Likeable

16 Channel Channel- Provide the space, between communication

17 Climate Climate- influences the emotional, attitude, and intellectual tone. Atmosphere.

18 Communicator Communicator- makes meaning, sends and receives messages, and also exchanges meanings.

19 Barrier Barrier-Blocks communication

20 Feedback Allows sender receiver info and ensures communication also unavoidable

21 Noise Interferes and/or disrupts communication may be internal or external between two people.

22 Message Conveys meaning, feeling and energy from sender receiver to receiver sender.

23 Physical environment Influences the quality of interaction within the physical space.

24 Context Provides the people, occasion and task
