This segment is going to answer the following common concerns for students pursing a generalist certification: How to assure all university requirements for a bachelors degree are found in your transcript. - Pre-requirements (freshmen/ sophomore semesters) -Upper level-requirement (junior/ senior semesters) Certifications needed for the generalist degree. Time managing everything

Requirements for admission : Passage of the THEA( formally TASP) test. GPA 2.5 (min) Completion of lower division course work Admission to the Teacher Education Program required before taking block courses. Completion of 54 semester hours prior to enrollment to Professional Education Courses.

Faculty Advisors Undergraduate students are assigned a faculty advisor when their degree plan is prepared. All undergraduate students should receive an official degree plan for signature during their first semester of courses at UHV.

Teaching Certificates are currently divided into three grade ranges: Early Childhood through Grade Six (EC-6 or Elementary Education) Grade Four through Grade Eight (Grades 4-8 or Middle School Education) Grades Eight through Twelve (High School or Secondary Education)

Elementary and middle school teachers may obtain generalist certificates which allow them to teach all subjects in their grade range Secondary school teachers must choose a subject/content area for certification. Teachers may also seek certification for the following in the grade level of their base initial certificate Special Education (EC-12) English as a Second Language (EC-8)

One of the first things a student should know, is to make sure all of their requirements are found in their own transcript. The perfect way to do this, is to organize their classes into the following categories: Pre-requirements (freshmen/ sophomore semesters Upper level-requirement (junior/ senior semesters) A combined total of 6 semester hours in natural sciences (biology, chemistry, geology and/or physics; a combination is preferred), one of which must have a lab. 6 semester hours of mathematics are required in addition to the university core requirements. MATH 1350 and MATH 1351 should be taken 3 semester hours in fundamentals of speech. 18 semester hours in the academic concentrations and specializations including 6 hours of TECA 1354 and EDUC 1301 courses. 3 semester hours of a computer proficiency course. ENG 3430, Professional Writing 12 semester hours of core distribution electives in the humanities and social sciences area. 27 semester hours in the academic concentrations and specializations. 24 hours of professional education including 9 semester hours of student teaching.

Another milestone a generalist student needs to be informed about is the two certifications needed: PPR & Generalist. PPR (Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities ): is a test your knowledge of basic teaching practices. It is not the same as the content test. For example, if you are trying to certify as a Generalist 4-8, you will take the 4-8 PPR and the Generalist 4-8 exams. Generalist Test: is a exam that’s designed to determine whether or not an individual possesses the teaching skills and the subject knowledge necessary to teach in a bilingual education program at the middle school level.

Finally, as a generalist student it’s important to time manage everything according to each semester. For example: Some classes are only available at UHV during a certain semesters, so check UHV’s catalog. Be sure that you English average is a 3.0 or greater. Finally, when registering for the student- teaching program; be forewarned that you’re only able to take only 1 additional class to accompany the semester.

Secondary Teacher Certification Programs leading to the certification of teachers for grades 8-12 are offered in cooperation among UHV's Schools of Arts and Sciences, Business,Administration, and Education and Human Development. Students earn their academic degrees through the Schools of Arts and Sciences and Business Administration while obtaining their teacher certification through the School of Education and Human Development

Planning… Stay in touch with your advisor and your certification analyst. Remember every course is not offered every semester. Be aware of the exact course number.

Secondary Education Program BLOCK COURSES Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education C&I 3323 Instructional Design IDS 3323 Child Development & Its Application to Learning. Note: Classes have field base requirements and must be taken concurrently. On the completion of the block try to pass the TExES PPR.

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION COURSES RDG 4364 Content Area Reading and Study Skills. ( Summer) FED 3321 Educational Foundations for Teaching. ( Fall ) CUIN 4313 Generic Teaching Skills. ( Spring) Note: All the above mentioned courses and 45 hrs. of observation should be completed before Student teaching. Try to pass the Content Exam before student teaching.

Application for Student Teaching is due a semester before. Spring Student Teaching application deadline is September 15. Fall Student Teaching application deadline is March 1.

TEACHING CERTIFICATION After passing all the exams and completion of course work, apply for Teaching certificate at TEA website. Apply for graduation: Spring by February 11 Summer by June 17 Fall by September 16
