4 Admission Requirements (UG)
Complete free application on TK20 Deadline: February 15 Submit transcripts Unofficial from Eastern Official from all other institutions Submit three recommendations Forms, not letters, available on the CARE web page Liberal Arts professor, major professor, educator Minimum GPA 3.00

5 Admission Requirements (UG)
Demonstrate basic competencies Take Praxis I Core (Reading, Writing, Mathematics) Minimum scores: Read 156; Write 162; Math 150 Take SAT Minimum scores: 450 Verbal, 450 Math, AND 1080 combined Take ACT Minimum scores: 22 Verbal, 19 Math Complete a background check Submit a “Fingerprint Verification Form” from a Regional Education Service Center (RESC), such as EASTCONN

6 Admission Requirements (UG)
Submit Service Clock Hours form 50 hours of service working with children Teaching capacity Similar age as your intended certification area Can be done through Center for Community Engagement (CCE) on campus Form must be signed by your supervisor

7 Admission Requirements (UG)
Pre-admission coursework Early Childhood Education (ECE) ECE 215 PSY 206 Elementary (ELE) and Secondary (SEC) EDU 200 EDU 250 EDU 210 or EDU 357 Interview conducted by Education Dept. faculty Will be scheduled after application deadline

8 Early Childhood Education
PreK- Grade 3 Prek-K special education; Grade 1-3 Regular Need a content area major: Anything but PE Unique Opportunities: Research at Center for Early Childhood Education Clinical experience at CFDRC preschool

9 Elementary Education General certification for grades 1-6
You are responsible for all content delivering including: Math, History/Social Studies, English, and Science Certification requirements: 4 field experiences (two clinical, one pre-student and student teaching) In addition to coursework you must successfully pass the following standardized tests Connecticut Foundations of Reading Praxis II

10 Secondary Education Secondary certification options
Smaller class sizes (usually) Less competition for jobs Certification is 7-12 BUT, you can teach in sixth grade in a middle school Certification areas: Math, History/Social Studies, English, Biology, Earth Science Cross-endorsement in a content area See content-area advisor: Dr. Koirala (MAT), Dr. Day (HSS & SCI), Dr. Fabrizi (ENG)

11 Undergraduate Program
Cohort begins in Fall Semester Cohort size: 30 candidates max What happens if I don’t get in? Don’t worry—all is not lost!

12 Early Start Option—Graduate Program
Apply to CARE and Graduate Division Deadlines: October 1 or January 5 Senior year ( credits) Begin taking classes in Spring Semester Finish undergrad program and graduate in May Apply to Graduate Division at the same time Continue program at grad level Summer classes  Fall  Spring (student teaching) Graduate with M.S.Ed. and certification in May

13 Early Start Option Benefits Detriments
Save money on grad school by starting as an undergrad Takes one additional calendar year to complete Master’s Command higher salary in most districts This will not be held against you as an applicant, according to every administrator I have interviewed Enroll in education classes only Easier to complete undergraduate degree Detriments More expensive (however: see bullet #3 above) Delays your start into teaching

14 Graduate Program Traditional graduate program
Apply to CARE and Graduate Division Application deadlines Jan. 5, Feb. 15, May 1, Aug. 1, Oct. 1 Begin taking classes in any semester Program takes one full calendar year Graduate with M.S. Ed. More expensive than Early Start Option All classes taken at graduate level Flexible starting semesters
