Has this ever happened to you? Sammy is reading. He comes to a word he doesn’t recognize… What should he do?

He should look for context clues! There are 5 main types of context clues!

Definition Clues #1 Sometimes the author defines the word for the reader soon after it is used in a sentence. TOP SECRET D

Definition Clues #1#1 EXAMPLE: Mr. Fry is an affable principal. He is pleasantly easy to approach and always friendly. D

Synonym or Restatement Clues #2 TOP SECRET Sometimes the author uses a synonym, or restates the word in a simpler way. S

Mr Definition or Explanation Clue #2 EXAMPLE: Mr. Fry is quite affable. In fact, he reminds me of Ms. Baker. Do you remember how kind she was? Synonym or Restatement Clues S S

Antonym or Contrast Clues #3 TOP SECRET Sometimes the author presents the opposite meaning somewhere nearby so that two words can be contrasted. A

Inference Clues #5 TOP SECRET Sometimes the word is not clarified in the same sentence. The reader must look for clues and make connections to their own experiences or what they already know about a topic.
