2 How do you determine the author’s POINT OF VIEW? 1. Read the passage. 2. Cross out the dialogue. 3. Look at the pronouns.

3 Step 1: Read the passage.

4 Step 2: Cross out the dialogue. What does “dialogue” mean? Dialogue is anything in quotation marks. “How old are you?” she asked.

5 Jose felt his stomach do a flip-flop. “I think I want to go home,” he said. Let’s Practice!

6 Step 2: Cross out the dialogue. “I want to go, too!” cried my little sister. I was tired of her following me everywhere.

7 Step 2: Cross out the dialogue. “It’s been a long day,” said Amy. She would be glad when this day was over.

8 Step 2: Cross out the dialogue. I was angry with my parents. I can’t believe they are making me move! I thought.

9 Step 2: Cross out the dialogue. “I’m sorry,” said Karen, “I didn’t mean to push you.” She felt so embarrassed.

10 Step 3: Highlight the pronouns. Find all of the pronouns in the narration. Review- what is a pronoun? Highlight them.

11 I, me, my, minewe, us, our These pronouns indicate 1 st person ! You’re done!!!

12 he, him, histhey, their, them she, her These pronouns indicate 3rd person ! Keep going!

19 Let’s Review! 1 st Person 3 rd Person Uses the pronouns I, me, my, we, us in the narration. I woke up this morning feeling terrific. I hopped out of bed, excited to start the new day. I knew that today was the day my big surprise would arrive. Use the pronouns he, she, him, her, they, them in the narration. Brian woke up this morning feeling terrific. He hopped out of bed, excited to start the new day. He knew that today was the day his big surprise would arrive.

20 3 rd Person Limited The narrator tells the story from the viewpoint of one character in the story. Sue felt nervous. She hoped she had studied enough. Last night, she hadn’t felt like studying for the test. Now that the time of the test had arrived, she wished she had studied more. Sue looked across the room and spotted Shawn. I wish I were like him, she thought. He always knows the answers!

21 3 rd Person Omniscient “Omniscient” means “all- knowing” The narrator has unlimited knowledge, and can describe every character’s thoughts. Sue felt nervous. She hoped she had studied enough. Last night, she hadn’t felt like studying for the test. Now that the time of the test had arrived, she wished she had studied more. On the other side of the room, Shawn was feeling nervous, too. I have to pass this test he thought, or my parents are gonna kill me. He wished his parents didn’t expect him to always be so perfect.

22 3 rd Person Limited or Omniscient? Cindy stayed after school to see her teacher. She felt very upset and worried because she had no clue what Mrs. Tate wanted. “Mrs. Tate, would you explain the math homework to me?” asked Cindy. Mrs. Tate felt annoyed. “Cindy, I saw you writing notes and passing them in class. If you would have been paying attention, you wouldn’t have to be here now asking me what to do.”

23 3 rd Person Limited or Omniscient? Cindy stayed after school to see her teacher. She felt very upset and worried because she had no clue what Mrs. Tate wanted. “Mrs. Tate, would you explain the math homework to me?” asked Cindy. Mrs. Tate felt annoyed. “Cindy, I saw you writing notes and passing them in class. If you would have been paying attention, you wouldn’t have to be here now asking me what to do.” “She” indicates 3 rd person. It is omniscient because we know what 2 people are thinking.

She had heard about Alex. He had a reputation for being a little terror! Jackie wasn’t so sure about babysitting now. “Mom, I don’t really want to babysit now,” she said.

If it is 3 rd person, determine how many characters you know the thoughts of. 1. One person- limited 2. More than one person- omniscient
