1 Gloria Who Might Be My Best Friend – Day 2
Unit 1 - Friendship Gloria Who Might Be My Best Friend – Day 2

2 Strategy – Making Connections
Making connections between what you read and your own experiences is a good way to enjoy and understand a story. Think of connections as you read.

3 Choral Read Page 14 I can understand the way that the boy who’s telling this story feels. He feels lonely because he doesn’t have anyone his own age to lay with. I can remember feeling the same way when I didn’t have anyone to do something with. I was sad and lonely, and feeling very sorry for myself.

4 Choral Read Pages 15 and 16 I read that when Julian didn’t do a cartwheel properly, he “looked at Gloria to see if she was laughing.” I remember trying to hit the ball in a game of baseball and missing. I was afraid my friend would laugh at me. But instead, she helped me learn how to stand and swing at the ball.

5 Making Connections How has a friend helped you to learn something new?
What other connections to the story can you share with the class? Choral read pages 16 – 19.

6 Making Predictions Good readers often stop to think about what they are reading and then make a prediction about what might happen next based on the clues in the story. As they continue to read, they check to see if their prediction was confirmed.

7 Predictions While reading, I learned that Julian told Gloria he wished she would live nearby for a long time. Then Gloria said, “I wish I would too.” As I continue to read, I see that Gloria is going to tell Julian the best way to make wishes come true.

8 Probably, they will try. I wonder if it will work
Probably, they will try. I wonder if it will work! I’ll keep reading in order to find out. Given what the author has told us about the characters so far, what do you think will happen next? Choral read Page 20.

9 Summarizing We’ve read a lot about Gloria and Julian. Let’s check to see if we understand what’s happened so far. Sometimes it helps to think about what you have read and then to sum it up in your own words. Summarizing helps me to understand what is happening in the story.

10 Summarizing I know that this is a story about a boy named Julian who never wanted a girl for a friend until he met Gloria. Julian and Gloria meet one day as she is moving into her new house, but he really wasn’t very interested, because he never wanted a girl as a friend.

11 Summarizing Gloria and Julian turned cartwheels together.
They looked in the robin’s nest and saw eggs. Julian showed Gloria his room and they shared some Kool-Aid.

12 Summarizing Julian and Gloria both wished that Gloria would live there a long time. They were going to make a kite and tie their wishes to the kite.

13 Summarizing Let’s continue to read, and as we do, remember to summarize what we are reading. Make sure you understand what you have just read. Let me know if you would like to share our summary with the group. Choral read pages 21 and 22.

14 Confirming Predictions
Earlier I predicted that Julian and Gloria would try to make their wish that they could remain neighbors and friends come true. Now that I have read more, I know that my prediction was confirmed. That was the fourth wish that he wrote to tie to the kite’s tail.

15 Confirming Predictions
But, Gloria is keeping her wishes a secret. I wonder if she will ever tell Julian about the wishes she wrote. I predict that she won’t because she is afraid that telling will keep the wishes from coming true. What do you predict? What clues in the text lead you to that prediction? Choral read pages 23 to 25.

16 Summarizing Our last summary ended when Julian and Gloria were making a kite. What happened after that?
