History of 4faculty ► Why was it developed ?  The GROWTH of the California Community College system ► 1.7 million students growing at 6% per year ! ► 5,000 new adjunct positions in next 5 years statewide!  High DEMAND for Effective Teaching … ► Demand for access to education + a less prepared, more diverse student population = need for effective teaching

History of 4faculty ► Original Purpose:  Promote excellent instruction  Bring adjunct faculty into campus community more quickly and effectively  Increase student success and retention

Findings of the Institute of Applied Research, CSUSB Where do faculty report they need help CountPercent In knowledge of support services available to you % In techniques for motivating students % In knowledge of support services available to students % In the use of technology as a teaching tool % In dealing with various student learning styles % In college policies and procedures % To use a variety of teaching methods % In methods to evaluate student learning % In dealing with students who are underrepresented % To organize delivery of the curriculum % To deal with various student classroom disruptions & emergencies % In techniques for structuring class time % To construct a syllabus % In communication skills %

After the First Year … ► Evaluation Report by the Institute of Applied Research, CSUSB  The Positive Results: ► Most useful sections:  Syllabus Creation  Helping Students Succeed  Surviving the Journey  Approaches to Teaching (new title in version 2)

After the First Year … ► Evaluation Report by the Institute of Applied Research, CSUSB  The Comments: ► I found every part extremely useful, from the lesson planning aids to the technology classroom integration tools and the sections on college policies (online evaluation). ► All parts of the course are useful (online evaluation). ► Rather than any one lesson, the most useful part of 4faculty.org is the wealth of practical advice with cross-discipline applicability (online evaluation).

After the First Year … ► Evaluation Report by the Institute of Applied Research, CSUSB  The Comments: ► I have become more aware of the needs of my students (online evaluation). ► I will use more variety with my classes so that I am covering all the different ways students learn (online evaluation). ► I plan to be open to the difference in learning styles (online evaluation). ► I am much more aware of the student and that I need to evaluate where they are at and ensure that I focus on them much more and how I can deliver the lesson to their understanding (online evaluation). ► I think it has helped me realize how to communicate better and listen to the students. Try to involve them and realize that they learn by participating more rather than I’m just talking at them (telephone interview).

After the First Year … ► What we’ve learned:  Significant revision of the software was needed  College specific links really matter  Core content needs to be delivered in the fewest possible words  Faculty appreciate tangible tools for use in their classes  Faculty do change their behavior as the result of 4faculty
