1. Exploring the National Educational Technology Standards for Administrators, Teachers, and Students Presented by: Jana Bowling

2. What are the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS)? Why do Administrators, Teachers, and Students all need to be aware of the NETS? How can Administrators ensure NETS are being met throughout the school building? How can Teachers integrate the NETS into the content areas and met Performance Standards as well? How can Students be made aware of these standards and be “tested” on their knowledge?

3. The NETS were developed by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). As technology has become an important part of education in the past few years, ISTE established the standards and have recommended programs and products that can help students better understand how to use technology while learning and beyond. The NETS are performance based standards that have been established for administrators, teachers, and students.

4. "Integrating technology throughout a school system is, in itself, significant systemic reform. We have a wealth of evidence attesting to the importance of leadership in implementing and sustaining systemic reform in schools. It is critical, therefore, that we attend seriously to leadership for technology in schools." — Don Knezek, ISTE CEO Rapid advances in technology are putting new demands on educators and students. The ISTE NETS will provide a framework for educators to use as they transition schools from Industrial Age to Digital Age places of learning.

5. Students will be expected to apply the basics in authentic, integrated ways to solve problems, complete projects, and creatively extend their abilities. ISTE's National Educational Technology Standards for Students (2007) help students prepare to work, live, and contribute to the social and civic fabric of their communities. The new standards identify several higher- order thinking skills and digital citizenship as critical for students to learn effectively for a lifetime and live productively in our emerging global society.

6. 1. Provide Visionary Leadership (NETS 1) and be a technology advocate to all stakeholders and promote a shared vision for “comprehensive integration of technology.” 2. Create and sustain a digital-age learning culture (NETS 2) within the school by ensuring effective technological environments are provided for all students. 3. Display excellence in professional practice (NETS 3) by allowing teachers and other school staff to spend time learning how to utilize existing and new technologies available.

7. 4. Make systemic improvement (NETS 4) throughout the building to establish effective use of information and technology resources. 5. Practice digital citizenship (NETS 5) by modeling and establishing policies and social interactions for the use of technology at school.

8. Provide workshops for teachers and school staff over new technologies that can be used. Advocate for technology based learning in the school system, state, and nation. Establish policies that must be followed by teachers and students when using technology. When a teacher utilizes technology well, have that teacher share his/her ideas. Develop a shared vision about how technology should be used and further developed

9. 1. (NETS 1)Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning. 2. (NETS 2) Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources. By implementing NETS in the classroom, teachers are exhibiting good teaching strategies, including differentiation, through the effective use of technology. Both students and teachers should use technology in the classroom for learning to take place in a relevant manner.

10. 4. Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes of an professional in a digital society. 5. Teachers understand issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior. 5. Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.

11. ActivityGPSNETS Students will research information concerning a future career and then produce a typed research paper. ELA6W3 - The student uses research and technology to support writing. NETS-S3: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. NETS-T2b, 4a Students will create a guide to Canada on a webpage to review the facts that they learned about Canada and issues concerning Canada. SS6G5,7 The student will locate selected features of Canada. The student will discuss environmental issues in Canada. NETS-S1: Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. NETS-S4 NETS-T1, 2

Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. 6. Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations.
